Good historical place to explore in Ipoh
Oct 2020
Been there with a big group of us, its quite far from the town but it definitely worth the trip as it has some historical stories and the first elevator in Malaysia.

Mesmerising Historical Building
Oct 2020 • Friends
The castle was very huge and mysterious since it's empty. I really mesmerized by the architecture and the surrounding were very quiet. Kids may feel boring if you guys bring them since there's no activity to involve. It can be a best place to take photos since the scenery was very beautiful !! Entrance fee is needed but not that expensive. A worth visit !!

A Moment In Time
Feb 2021
It is tucked away in the Kinta district of Perak in Batu Gajah approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur and a mere 30 minutes from Ipoh.

It is the ruined and unfinished mansion which was rumoured to have been either the residence to a Scottish Man’s son or a gift to his wife but was never completed due to his sudden death.

Unlike other castles we have visited in Europe which have done up beautifully, this was left to hands on time. And time has definitely not been kind. On the outside, it stands majestically but on the inside, only a few fenced up rooms have been left for display with the rest of the castle as raw as raw gets. You do get the eerie vibes walking along the hallowed corridor and stair well with some of the haunting stories told on the wall. Unlike places like the killing fields and the S-21 prison in Cambodia where you have bloodstains left on the walls and have your hair standing on ends, in here its more of a peaceful feeling especially with the beautiful surrounding greenery and especially when the warm rays of the sun bask the corridors a lovely golden yellow. To all the photography lovers, don’t miss the fence at the entrance to the stairs leading to the castle where people have placed locks similar to that of the bridges in Paris.

After an hour stroll around the castle grounds, we managed to conclude a few things. Firstly, it was a nice pit stop but not exactly a must. We have passed it many times before but never stopped because it was extremely crowded. Having been to the castle and knowing what to expect, do we regret passing it whilst it was crowded? No. But that said, if its not too crowded and if you have some time on your hands, why not? However, interestingly, the castle charges a small fee should you decide to take photos using any sort of camera aside from your phone camera. So do bear that in mind.

Apart from that, bring along some water and a brave heart and you’re good to go!

Historical stories about Kellie's Castle and it's owner were found rich here. The entrance fees definitely worth and we can discover the building freely in the way we like.

Long-time Resident Forced to Pay Tourist Price
Dec 2020
As a long-time resident of Malaysia, I have visited Kellie's Castle several times. On this particular day, the lines were very long and there was a very high number of visitors - concerning considering local Covid-19 numbers. What was most upsetting to our party, is that despite having iKad, Malaysian drivers license, work visas, and paying taxes, we were treated as tourists and forced to purchase tickets at the higher price. The two staff at the entry were unbending and told us to call their boss. We did not want to hold up the line, so we paid the higher price but it was insulting to be treated as such especially since the borders are closed and we have lived in country 20+ yrs. In regards to the "castle," the grounds were well-kept but there was considerable trash in the river. There was no control over number of people in the various areas and many were not wearing masks. If you plan to visit during the pandemic, you may want to keep these issues in mind. The views from the hill are beautiful and the history is interesting.

Historical Places

Some people prefer to visit on weekend, but my experience happened during weekdays. Kellie's Castle is one of the place which I consider a good place to spend with your family. The surrounding is moderate, but the scenery is beautiful especially in the evening. Recommended!

I went here a decade ago when it was more simple. Now there's a souvenir store, 3D picture, photo and caricature booths, good toilet and parking facilities.
At the basics, this is just a big unfinished building. European visitors might not be impressed. Also it can be quite hot during day time.

Good short trip from Ipoh

An old building left behind by the British. Nice to walk around and inside to feel the spirit. Better go in a rainly day.

Interesting history
Jul 2020 • Family
My family enjoyed walking around the castle and learning about the history. Neatly presented and laid out. You'll only need an hour maximum for this but worth it if you want to see a castle.
