We walked to this monument from Cespedes Square and it was quite the haul in the hot Cuban sun. We went by the barracks first, which was about 15-20 minutes from the square and then this was about 30 minutes from there. It took us about 30 minutes to walk back to the square afterwards because we couldn't find a... More

This was our first stop on our bus tour of Santiago and very fitting given that the theme of our 9-day tour was AfroCuban history and culture and General Antonio Maceo is definitely one of the most important AfroCuban heroes in Cuba. The 23 machetes punctuate the skyline. The visual impression is immediately stunning and dramatic. One of the more... More

Drove past this monstrosity multiple times heading in and out of Santiago. It was definitely eye-catching. General Maceo really towers over you. I was with a group and we had multiple things planed and we were finally able to stop and visit the monument without simply driving by on our last day in Santiago. We were also able to visit... The statue of Antonio Maceo on horseback towers above the square and shows him with out stretched hand calling people to follow him. The spikes sticking out from the ground symbolise swords and machetes. At first glance the statue appears to be carved from rock but it is in fact made from Bronze. The extremely large Revolution Square is the... More

This is a very inspiring monument to the revolution. There are a couple of signs, but are in Spanish. Very beautiful though

This huge sculpture stands alone overlooking the square. It is enormous and and sends a message to all Cubans of the meaning of communism.

Imagining the famous 8 hours peach from Fidel Castro in that square in the hot sun was mind blowing. You need a guide or book to explain the surrounding buildings and monument. No toilets available but wheelchair friendly. No shade.
