This was an organized tour by an outfitter operating out of Bavaro. We took a ~1.5 hr bus ride west through Miches to Sabana de la Mar where we boarded a boat for a tour through Samana Bay and the National Park. This is where they filmed parts of Jurassic Park, and you can tell why. Samana Bay is where... More

Great excursion, beautiful caves, good rock formations, many birds, beautiful scenery. Was good to get away from the hotel, and be able to get all that space.

You need to take a boat tour to get there. We went with Peninsula tours. The guide was excellent, knowledgeable, friendly and personable. We visited the bird islands - very cool formations, caves with hieroglyphics, and a neat ecopark restaurant with cascading falls and multiple pools. We left at 8 and returned at 4. The price was reasonable and it... More

The Park Nacional Los Haitises is a massive expanse of red and white mangroves west of Sabana de la Mar that protects several plant and bird species, includes a wide variety of marine life and has hidden amongst it the ruins of old sugar plantations and numerous cave systems, once home to the original indigenous population of Dominican Republic, the... Haitises National Park is a very scenic beautiful place. You can only get there by boat so if you get sea sick it is not for you. It is a bunch of small islands, where you can see birds and caves. It takes about 45 minutes from the marina to get there. While traveling there you can see the long... More

Interesting rock formations and tons of birds. Saw nesting pelicans all over the place. There were hundreds of birds of all types flying overhead. A short trip thru the mangroves and a short hike brought you to the caves with the pre-Columbia cave paintings. The guides were very knowledgeable and explained all the paintings. Walking thru the caves is definitely... More

The boat ride was enjoyable, having some rum and taking in the views. The park was amazing to see, and the caves were so interesting. The few hours in the beach was nice, however disappointing it was dirty with garbage because it really was like paradise.

Open boat tours around a bunch of islands that are exactly the same as you can see from the resort. The water is littered with bottles and crap. Lots of herons to see (pretty common ). The caves were unspectacular. The drawings inside the cave are mixed with graffiti type drawings (ruining the authenticity). Then you are taken to a... More
