A facinating historic fort on the road less travelled. Haiti struggles with its infrastructure so it is surprising the energy that has been put into making this a much visited historic site. Slowly it is taking on the mantle of a well managed location but really needs the finishing touches. The interior museum is built but contains no artifacts as... More

Really enjoyed the views, the history, and the ride up. Be sure to ride the horse, it would be a long walk if you do not. If you can get a translator who can explain the history.

Very nice historic place. I would recomend to get a guide since they know well the history of the place and they will take you to the ruins of another Castle and tell you its story in a very nice and simple way! If you have a health problem you should rent a donkey and go up on it. Buy... More

We visited the citadelle on a day that it was quite foggy. The citadelle literally loomed up as a ship from the fog. This is especially special as it was modelled on a ship. Apparently kind Christoph is buried here somewhere (couldn't find him though ;-). The history of the fort (why it was built, how, that is was never... More

The hike up there is a bit of a challenge, but doable, and well worth the effort. Our group had hired a car and guide to facilitate things. I also had a young man (perhaps 11 years old) who latched onto the old lady in the group (that would be me) and shared stories about the place and his own... More

The Citadelle is one of the beautiful place in Haiti! it was my biggest experience during the summer in 2016. Ride horse, take photos, the view in the mountains, the fresh air, eat "bouillon" the story of the Citadelle is Just amazing!

view of the city, the mountains and beyond. we heard about the hike but it wasn't very long. there are quite a few things to see. We had a guide which makes it a bit more interesting since I didn't know too much about the history before

If you are interested in history, this fort is a highlight. Loved the sight of the old decaying cannons and stone walls and cannon balls stacked in neat piles ready to be used. This fort has a great ambiance and a fascinating history - don't miss the Sans-Souci palace nearby to complete the story of King Henry. Walking to the... More

We walked up the pathway versus taking a horse. We didn't like the condition of the horses and walked up the cobbled stone steps instead, definitely wear sturdy sneakers versus flip flops. The view up top was magnificent on a clear day.
