This is the third time my wife and I visited the wildlife refuge on our trips to Puerto Rico. His time we walked the Lagoon Trail. We saw at least 13 types of birds and enjoyed the different plants in a dry forest. Bring water and bug spray. The walk is relatively easy ( 1.47 miles). It gets hot so... More

I spent this weekend at Parador Combate Beach Resort in Cabo Rojo. It is adjacent to the Wildlife Refuge. One afternoon, I took a walk through this birds' santuary to observe the sunset near Combate Beach. It was gorgeous and threre were many other people sitting on the beach looking at the sunset. The trails are well maintained and the... More

Off the beaten path of the normal roads. Totally worth driving down dirt roads and walking to the beach. You are able to walk to the lighthouse and the other side of the cove on the rock outcrop to get the best views. Get there early and stake your clam to a spot under the trees if you want shade.

The visitor center is well done, good visual displays, a terrific short wildlife movie featuring the profusion of bird life around there. The staff is friendly and helpful. Quite near the center's parking are the trailheads you can use to get exercise and see many species up close. Understand that this is 'dry forest' and salt flat country, not wet... More

We were given a friendly welcome by the staff and were offered a very interesting video on the wildlife of Cabo Rojo that was very useful at time of sight-seeing the surrounding areas.

The shame of this place is that there is an uncapped landfill right next to the reserve - and plastic bags blown all over the landscape. We did see some beautiful birds and took one of the interpretive walks - albeit without a trail guide.

We arrived on a day the facility was closed, but we were in luck. A tour company had made special arrangements and they asked if we'd like to join their group for the informative information the staff was about to tell everyone. The staff was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The entire salt collection process is fascinating.

If you enjoy birding, this is a must see on your vacation. As with all birding, earlier in the day is better. The staff is welcoming, knowledgable, and very helpful.

After looking the area over from their tower we took the trail around the salt ponds (salinas) looking for birds. At midday it was pretty quiet but we did see good numbers of birds and butterflies. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
