About
This historic area in San Juan exudes old-world charm. Walk along the cobbled streets and past colorful buildings, historic fortresses, and old city walls, some of which date back to the 16th century. You might even chance upon local musicians playing some salsa or jazz tunes. There are also several museums where you can learn more about the history, art, and culture of the area, plus cool cocktail bars and restaurants for a quintessentially Puerto Rican meal. Don't miss all the best sights (and food!) on a walking tour of Old San Juan. – Tripadvisor

Great Day Trip. Definitely add to your itinerary for Puerto Rico.
Old San Juan is beautiful. Our family (7 of us with five kids ages 17-21) spent the day walking the streets, shopping, and exploring. The shops are on the touristy side, but the architecture was amazing. Make sure to stop by the old canon battery park and visit with the 200+ pigeons that make the park their home. The kids were laughing and taking pictures with ten birds sitting on their heads/shoulders and arms. The Cathedral is beautiful, the walk around the old wall by the sea is picturesque, and the national historic site of the fort is amazing. We parked at the Dona Fela parking garage, which was a good starting location for our exploration. It was $11.50 for 6-7 hours. Anita La Mamma del Gelato had the best Gelato we had ever tasted. Definitely worth a stop. Overall, a great day trip. Not sure I would spend more than a day here. Lots of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated. We ate dinner at La Deavadura, which was excellent Puerto Rican food at affordable prices.

Beautiful streets, but mostly caters to cruise ships
Viejo San Juan reminds me of many other old European cities we've visited in Spain and Italy. It has beautiful cobblestone streets, colorful houses, gorgeous views of the water, and delightful plazas and churches. Unfortunately, like many port cities, much of it is given over to cruise ship passengers, with tons of duty free shops, factory outlets, and mediocre food. Definitely spend a day here to learn more about the oldest city in the hemisphere, and to visit the castillos and interesting museums, but you won't need more than that.

    Great San Juan Walking Tour
Juan Carlos was a great tour guide with a great expanse of knowledge of San Juan’s history. It was our first day in San Juan and was well spent. We also appreciated his recommendations for places to eat afterwards.

A fun and engaging tropical place to visit!
An enchanting old city with many stories to tell . . . . Everything is walkable, although there are some hills. The ancient city walls provide great opportunities to take in views. And the Cathedral is truly lovely.

    Favourite city in the Caribbean
We loved Old San Juan. There is a lot to see, do, and eat while there! The township is colourful and it has a good atmosphere, with lots of stalls and stores to visit. Restaurants and bars are also abundant. USD is the currency used. Prices are standard for an island and the locals are mostly welcoming. You can walk to a lot of places, including the two fortresses, cathedral and the city shops. Pro: the cobblestone streets and colourful buildings. Con: it was very hot in July! Be prepared for the heat if you visit during this time of year. You can skip off to the mountains to cool off if needed. Tip: remember your camera! You will regret not taking photos. Take away: I will definitely visit again.

    Did not disappoint!
Great service despite only 1 young guy working the entire front of house (dining room, patio, and carry-out) *wish I could remember his name.* Server was informative and patient. Food was wonderful. One of my favorite restaurant experiences in Puerto Rico.

    Excellent place to visit.
Plenty of shops, food and alcohol. We walked the shops for a few hours one day and half of our day the next and we are still not done. Ferry is also here and fun to do. I’m amazed at how friendly everyone is. Some shops are closed but still plenty to do. I was told that weekends are busier and most places close on Mondays. I felt like I was in Mexico but way safer. You can walk around like nothing. Traffic is not crazy and everything hs been so peaceful. We will definitely plan another trip.

    The Fort is worth seeing
The fort in Old San Juan is a great historicalsite. It does require walking so wear good walking shoes. After visiting the Fort grab a delicious Pina Colada, Virgin or Alcoholic, both are great and then head to the shopping area near the cruise ship entry area.

History and Entertainment in one place
Old San Juan is one of a kind, in a good way! There is a lot of history, colorful structures and cobblestone streets. Plenty of outdoor sites to visit. There are two large castles from the Spanish ear that are considered historic sites and recognized by UNESCO. Near Old San Juan are Santurce, Condado and Isla Verde with modern buildings and exquisite restaurants and nightlife

This is where the food and culture our found
It’s all about culture and the old world in the old Puerto Rico. Parts of it are 500 years old. Most of it is at least a hundred. The shops and restaurants have the standard stuff but it’s great. Really hits the spot between travel culture and tourism. A fine but difficult balance to achieve.

Great area to visit for about 4 hours and not much longer. The restaurants are just okay and highly priced with poor service. We were expecting much more based on what we read on other reviews. Could have been more places to read about the history of the area to get a better understanding of what changes the area had over the years. It would have been great to see more local shops selling something other than cheap tourist items.

Very interesting old city full of history. Charming buildings, great restaurants, historic forts. You could spend multiple days taking it all in. Wear good shoes, there are hills and steps getting from the north to the south. Take a walking tour, a good way to learn about the city.

First off, it is a beautiful area with well kept historical monuments and buildings. Food choices are also decent and priced fairly. One terrible thing happened on our last night there which is enough to sour the whole trip. We circled around the whole area for 1.5 hours in search of parking, but unfortunately all parking garages were full, And then we spotted an open space in front of a church facing the main street and there was no "residential parking only" sign within that block . We didn't think much of it and went on to enjoy our afternoon in the old Town area. Later on that evening upon returning to the car. There were 2 parking tickets on the windshield total of $320, so I have to chalked up the amount and paid for it. Thinking that since the city needs the money that bad, they can have it. Unfortunately, this is the first and last for me in PR . I will spend my $$$ else where, and would not recommend PR to all my friends and family.

We spent two nights in Old San Juan and loved the fact that the streets and neighborhoods were so charming. Each fort had its own breathtaking views so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and explore the town from one end to the other!

I am a local visiting my family. In previous years visits I was very disappointed with the state of disrepair of monuments, buildings roads in the Old San Juan area. But this visit was very good. I found it to be clean. A lot of places were restored since my last visit, and there was a nice livelihood of the area.

Caution…this is not a city to bring a handicapped or someone who is mobility impaired. It’s on a mountain and the sidewalks are small & very steep. Unlike the rest of Puerto Rico which has enormous potholes everywhere however Old San Juan has smooth streets. This is definitely a village inside a seaside castle. The views are amazing and the shopping covers everything you can imagine. Parking is a super pain so don’t expect to rush in & rush out. The police are actively ticketing people so don’t park in areas you aren’t sure of. This town with its history is an easy two days of exploring.

Overall, an amazing experience! At first, it was really hard to find parking and took us about half an hour. But after we got out it was beautiful! The colorful houses and colorful streets are a delight to walk down. Quite busy, because of lots of cruise ships, but it was great!
