About
Balneario El Escambron is a little beach, just to the east of Old San Juan. It is a family-friendly beach, with a small crescent of clean sand and usually calm waters, thanks to the coral reef a short distance from the beach.

Loads of options, just know where to look
Sep 2021
This beach definitely felt like it was where the locals went, which was fun to be a part of.
It's a short uber/taxi from old city. Depending where you get dropped off, you may have to walk a bit, depending on what kind of experience you're looking for.
SURF: There's a surf spot (La Ocho) right near the parking area, but there's no surf rental spot for a long walk, so you have to BYOB.
SAND: If you just want sand to lay on and splash around in the water, there are tons of spots.
SNORKEL: For snorkeling, you have to walk a bit from the main parking area, over toward the Caribe Hilton. (The reviewer who talks about not seeing anything but minnows must have not walked far enough.) The Scuba Dogs stand has rentals for masks, fins, and lockers, and a map of what to see in the water. Use the Scuba Dogs stand as a landmark for where it's good to snorkel. There's tons of coral, some man-made reef stuff, and loads of fish. The visibility wasn't great when we were there, but the guy at Scuba Dogs said mornings are usually better for visibility.
SCUBA: You can also Scuba dive here, either as a Discover Scuba beginner tour, or certified divers can rent equipment and walk right in to self-guide (or pay more to get a divemaster to show you around). It's quite shallow as diving goes, so you can likely get a lot of time for your tank. Some self-guided certified divers we chatted with said it was really cool.

Local Beach
Aug 2021
I love this beach - actually more than Condado. It is small, has clearly defined swim areas and lifeguards. Because of encircling rock formations, there is very little surf and the water is crystal clear. Go in the morning before the clouds show up around 1:00PM. There are public bathrooms/changing rooms and outdoor showers - when we were there only one shower worked, but it did the job. Mostly locals - another plus, and if you are even a little adventuresome, you can walk from Old San Juan.

The most AMAZING beach!
Jul 2021
I read all the reviews of this beach. Reluctantly we went to this beach because we were exploring Old San Juan area. It was the most beautiful beach. Let me start by saying I am convinced prior reviews must have been there on days much different than us. The water was crystal clear - crystal!! We did see the snorkeling excursion go out so we decided to follow their path. It was not that great. A bit murky by the swimming roped off area only but there was not much out there. The left side along the rocks was the clearest and we did see much sealife all the way out the to roped left side. Saw lobster, flounder, sea cucumbers, lots of sergeant majors and blue fish along with many yellow striped ones. We wondered what was on the other side of the rocky area. So we walked over to the other side to see if we could see more fish on the other side. There was some but not as many. We kept swimming a little further and then suddenly, there was coral and tons of fish. We have snorkeled so many places in the world. I would rate this a 6 out 10. It was so clear and lots to see. Large sea fans, large brain corals and large yellow corals, tube coral and larger fish. So much fun! We ran into four large manatees. They were just feeding on the grass. They just kept eating and we floated around them just watching. So when someone says this place has no good snorkeling, my guess is that they never tried the other side of the rocks. We snorkeled straight across until the beach ran out and then we cut back to shore. There were groups snorkeling on the other side of the bridge and pretty gross looking water for turtles. If you want to see turtles, go to Culebra. We saw about 10 on Culebra snorkeling with Kayaking Puerto Rico.

calm, shallow, warm waters close to San Juan, but not good snorkeling to see stuff
Mar 2021
This beach has two parts, the longer and shorter portion. If you don't explore, you won't know the other portion is there. There are many scenic picturesque areas, including the old fort structure. We stayed in the shorter area where people were doing snorkel and scuba tours. I'd say save your money on the snorkel tour as there is nothing to really see. We saw no less that 8 groups and I felt bad they payed money. Entrance is free and you pay like $5 to park if you have a car. We took a cab and had our our snorkel gear. Of the 3 hours here, I saw a lot of minnows (real tiny fish), a very few (less than 5) other colorful fish and one brown turtle. That's not good snorkeling, in my opinion. Water is cloudy but you can see through it. If you don't feel comfortable snorkeling and are learning, this is a good place to practice. It's a nice spot to swim and enjoy, relax the day away. We saw locals and tourists. Safe to leave your stuff on the beach. Some areas had shade. It's the best spot you will get in San Juan itself. I'd recommend if you don't want to travel far.

Easy to access beach right downtown
Feb 2021 • Couples
Hmm... beach was okay. Small and a bit crowded. I liked it because it was in a really convenient location and easy to access as it is right downtown and 5 minutes from the hotels. It makes sense given the close proximity and easy accessibility that I would have been as busy as it was. The water was clean and warm (compared to what we are used to!!) not a bad quick beach stop but would not recommend the whole day (I’d find a bigger beach)

We loved the beach, with Canada temperature if we saw a beach we need to swim. Was very clear water with palms.

Nearest beach to Viejo San Juan.
Mar 2020
This is a beautiful sited beach with views of Viejo San Juan and Condado along the Atlantic coast. There are limited facilities with bathrooms and showers to wash the sand off. The food vender may be open and has drinks.

Spring break 2020
Mar 2020 • Family
Soft sand, clear water & lots of sea life so bring goggles or snorkel gear! Nice restrooms and rinse off stations available for use. Great for laying out, snorkeling or just swimming in the protected reef area. Waves seemed to be smallest in the morning and at dusk If you have smaller kids. Lifeguards on duty and family friendly minus a couple groups of teenage springbreakers who were playing music but at a very respectful volume. Would definitely recommend spending a day here no matter your age. Not a lot of food/ drink places in the walking area so pack snacks and water for your day.

Great swimming near San Juan
Mar 2020 • Family
My daughters and I spent an afternoon here looking for a place to swim. It was perfect. The palm trees provided shade. The sea wall and rocks allowed for calm water to swim in and there were tons of fish to swim with. Definitely bring goggles or a snorkel set. One daughter found a conch shell with a critter still in it.

Very Nice Beach with a scenic walk from Old San Juan
Feb 2020
We attended every day of our one week stay in 2020. The walk from old San Juan is about 30 minutes and is very scenic. The snorkelling is decent. The beach is very nice and offers lots of shade, washrooms and shower stations. We really enjoyed this location.
Cheers
