This small museum is hidden on one of the side streets in Phillipburg. It contains so much history and interesting information that we spent hours there. Everyone interested in knowing more about St. Maarten should definitely visit there.

Well worth seeking out in an otherwise shopping obsessed town. If you are of British origin it is interesting to see another colonising country's (Dutch) view on colonisation/ slavery issues. Lots of interesting stuff here but the information about the Arawaks was particularly good.

We found it by turning down the Alley at No 5 Front Street in Philipsburg. This little street runs between Front St and Boardwalk. Look for stairs up to No7 and you will find it. Great little museum displaying items across many time periods. The story of the abolition of slavery was especiall interesting. Staff were a fount of knowledge... More

I am still a volunteer at the Museum and prejudiced at its ability to give our guests information about the island from a different perspective. I am always gratified to hear that people enjoyed learning about the heritage of the island, seeing more than just the essential jewelry and liquor stores. So much you can learn from either a long... Everything from Weapons to Househol artifacts going back to the beginning of European conquests. I especially liked the old maps and charts from the Netherlands.

My wife and I visited this wonderful museum yesterday as part of our 2 week stay on the island. As our visit comes to an end we felt that we really wanted to know more of this fascinating island's history and culture. The museum was just what we'd hoped for- interesting exhibits on the history, geology, society and culture really... More

This a good museum with a beginning to end exhibition of St Maarten from dinosaurs till today. It requires a bit of reading to get the most from the exhibits but they are good simple, well presented and above all local. We didn't have long enough to see more than about 75% of the museum before they closed but well... More

Once you see the surrounding waters, you'll understand why the history is so important. Cultural and seafaring background of this area is covered in brief but complete exhibits. The museum is small, the people are friendly and give a good overview of the holdings, and it's a calm, cool respite on a hot and humid day!

We spent most of our week in Sint Maarten luxuriating but thought it would feel like a more complete vacation if we dedicated one day to taking in the culture and learning about the island. So, we rented a car at our resort and drove around the entire island. This included a stop in Philipsburg where we discovered this gem... More
