    Part of the Nassau Experience
You can find almost everything that you want to take home at the Straw Market. You have to be careful though as the going through a few rows will pretty much tell you what the rest of the market has. It is possible to miss a 'gem' but most of the market sells the same thing at pretty much the same price. The colours or the design on the tee/hat might vary but it's otherwise the same. After a few rows, head to the back and you might see a few diff things, like carvings as an example. The quality is mediocre. Don't be afraid to barter and walk away but don't insult them with low prices either. Either way, you should go just to say you went there as it's all part of the experience. There are other things to check out in the are as well.

    Fun for a one-time visit
I had heard about the Straw Market that it was a great place for souvenirs. That it was but the offerings were a bit repetitive, and there were less handmade, good quality crafts than I had imagined. It was rather large and confusing as well, and overeager merchants kind of took away from the fun of browsing. I found the prices higher than in the stores, which didn't bother me. I did not appreciate being charged a $5 fee for credit card transactions though. That was a bit excessive given the prices, and I definitely bought less than I would have otherwise. I'm glad I checked out the market but probably won't visit again.

A Nassau icon, fun to see once.
If you've never been, you need to. At least once. If you don't like haggling on price, then once will be enough, but it's fun to see. If you like to haggle on price, then nothing is priced and they will usually hit you at about triple what they'll actually take for something. And many of the vendors have similar items so pit them against each other. Avoid the manufactured items that look like they came from Amazon and you can find some really cool hand made, authentic Bahamian treats. Again, look at it more like an experience than a shopping trip and you'll have more fun. Pro-tip. Keep different denominations of money in different pockets, so when you pull out "everything you've got" they're more likely to make the sale.

    Overwhelming
Very crowded and hot. Most of the booths sell similar things. Was told by a tour guide that the straw stuff isn’t actually handmade here but imported. Too overwhelming to be enjoyable for me but you can find some good stuff

    Cultural Experience
This is a cool market similar to the one in Charleston, South Carolina, if you have ever been there. Most the vendors have the same stuff but they will charm you into visiting them. The prices can all be negotiated. Be advised, you will likely find some similar items at the stores as you walk around and they will.some times be a lower price. It was a great experience for our kids to see how others make money.

Be firm but fair. Timid people who have trouble speaking for themselves should not come here.
You have to understand and have an appreciation for what this type of place is. You haggle. The shop keepers will pressure you. Not everything is hand made here. Most people don't want you to pay with a credit card because fees are expensive and eat into profits. As long as you know what you're getting into, this place is actually pretty cool. For the most part, the shop keepers will entice you to come see their items and if you say no thank you, they will very kindly wish you a good day. I'm very interested in the business aspect of how things work so I struck up conversation with a lot of the shop keepers and could very quickly tell who was genuine and who was not. The lady putting bracelets on your arm saying the school kids made them and that "donations" would go right to them? Don't fall for that one. The shop keep who has very obviously hand painted shot glasses and wood carvings, straw items, etc.? Check out what she has and be fair to her. Enjoy walking through, be firm but fair, and you will have a lovely time here and come away with some unique items as long as you know what you're looking for. If you are a timid person, I would stay away this place will eat you whole.

    Be ready to haggle
Marker has standard fare local handicrafts. It is a congested area that can get hot and crowded. It’s an experience. Know how much you want to spend on something before you engage the shop owner. Good luck- may the odds be ever in your favor😉

Some beautiful bags- look around first
Liked the friendly people and the bags were pretty. We bought some purses and beach bags. They will last forever. Fun to come for an hour and look around- lots of junk but also a few vendors with high-quality bags.

    Disapointed Shopper
We were to the straw market 30 years ago and it had an island flea market feel, then. It has been totally redone and now it feels like you are at a small scale outlet mall. It was a cloudy weekday with a few showers and only a few of the vendors were open. There were no real 'bargains'. I had hoped to find a woodcarver and buy some locally made items, but none were open. Lots of stuff from China!!! A thin tank top was $35 in one shop and $15 next door. We had some gelato and left.

    Neither pleasant nor relaxing.
I'll never go back to Nassau again. as soon as we got off the cruise ship there was a crush of vendors hawking rides, tours, hair braiding, directing you to a trinket vendor. then we went to the straw market, touted by many tourist websites. the straw market was many stalls containing the same cheap trinkets. and for those trinkets the initial quoted price was entirely outrageous, I guess expecting one to negotiate down. The positive part of the time in Nassau was when we found a taxi driver to drive us around to the historical sites at a reasonable price. I'm sure the fenced off all inclusive resorts are nice. there are many places I can have that experience.

Went to the Straw Market after arriving on a cruise ship with my sister. We walked around cruise port for a few minutes before deciding to cross the street to check out the famous Straw Market. We looked in a few other tourist shops first, most people were nice and did not pressure us to buy anything. When we got to the last shop right next to the Straw Market there were two women trying to direct us to the Straw Market. We waved them off and told them we would be heading down there shortly. When we exited the shop we were in, the two women were still there waiting for us. We began walking towards the Straw Market and they began following us. They immediately started trying to put bracelets on our wrists as a “welcoming gift”. I knew all about this little scam and said “No. I did not want the bracelet.” I walked a little ahead of my sister to get away from the woman trying to tie the bracelet on my wrist. I turned around to see the woman’s partner had already tied a bracelet to my sisters wrist. The woman bothering me took this opportunity to tie a bracelet around my wrist and told me again that it was a gift and she wasn’t going to ask for any money. Once she had tied the bracelet on me, of course she wanted a tip for them *eye roll* She was so overbearing and I just wanted these two women away from my sister and I. Before I could “tip” the woman she had somehow talked my sister into getting braids in her hair. She told my sister that it would cost $8. My sister was just trying to have fun on our vacation so she agreed. I knew this was a mistake but these women were so aggressive and did not take no for an answer. The women then took my sister and I into the alley right next to the straw market, pulled up a folding chair next to a Nissan van and started braiding my sister’s hair. The woman who had tied a bracelet on me continued to ask me for a tip while she braided my sisters hair. She asked for $5 for each bracelet (she had given me an extra one and I had dropped it because I was so flustered) I just wanted to make her stop bothering me but I only gave her $4 for the two. She continued braiding my sister’s hair. She put 9 small braids in right above her ear. As a side note, they were not the best quality braids I’ve ever seen but that’s beside the point. She then told my sister that it would be $70. $8 per braid. I was fuming!!! My sister did not have a lot of cash with her. I didn’t want to open my wallet to lend her cash with these women around us because I had a lot of cash with me and did not want to make myself a bigger target. The woman who had done the braids told us she would walk us to the ATM so my sister could get cash! I was hot mad! We went with her and my sister pulled the money out of her account, all while the woman was hovering over us. Once my sister paid the woman, she finally left us. However, we still had her partner to deal with. During the course of this whole event her partner was trying to separate me from my sister. She kept saying “I want to show you my shop.” Her shop was inside the Straw Market. I refused to leave my sister so she stood right next to us while she got her hair braided. She did take us to her “shop” inside the Straw Market. We were not interested in any of her items but she kept trying to force my sister to pick something while I stood behind her. I finally just had to say “Alright, I’m ready to move on.” My sister told the woman that we were going to continue looking around and we slipped away from her. I pulled my sister into a corner and told her to never do that again and to not make eye contact with anyone because this is how they get you. We continued looking around the Straw Market for a few minutes before eventually deciding that we could get better looking souvenirs in the cruise port. While trying to get out of the Straw Market, we were pestered by vendors at every turn to buy something or look at something. They would not take no for an answer. We were so upset and shaking by the time we got back to the cruise port. This experience ruined our one day in the Bahamas. Would not go back. I’m still upset about this whole experience but figured if I can help one person avoid these scams then it is worth putting on the internet. Be safe and stay vigilant. Also, definitely bring a bag that will stay in front of your body rather than a backpack. I had a backpack with me. Didn’t have anything stolen from me but wouldn’t put it past these scammers.

First trip back to Nassau since the huge remodel of the cruise port that leads to downtown Nassau, Bahamas, they have added a whole new city with shops and Amphitheater ..So once you get off the ship you can just walk or catch one of the golf cart shuttles to the new Port Marketplace where you will find lots of shopping with bathroom facilities throughout, you can also walk through and access the downtown Nassau and the StrawMarket...They have really down a nice job upgrading the area!

Busy place and they constantly harass you for business. Same merchandise throughout market. Did end up getting a baseball hat there though.

We visited the market go get a few souvenirs. Yes people ask to view their stores but no pressure and if you say no that’s ok and that’s ok they leave you alone.

We went around 2pm and not too busy but only 2 cruises where in port that day, but it does stay open until 6 ish
