Went on a kayak and snorkeling trip with Calabash Eco Adventures and loved the snorkeling around the Cay - completely worth it going out there. Reef is looking very alive with hard corals and an abundance of tropical fish. Had one nurse shark swimming round us towards the end (they're harmless and uninterested in us), and then shortly afterwards found one resting on top of the reef (somewhat unusual as they like to sleep under overhangs/in caves). The resting nurse shark decided it didn't like snorkelers staring at it, and swam away - straight underneath me! I could have touched it if I wanted, but I left it alone - scary and exciting. It was not nesting season for the protected birds, so we didn't see the reason this is a protected area, but you probably don't go to Peterson Cay to see birds.

By far the most interactive, colorful snorkeling experience ever! We even had dolphins swimming around us while we snorkelled. Amazing!

We came back again this year to visit our favorite little beach and it was just as we left it, beautiful! The day we took our boat there were probably only 6 other boats there and it was around 2pm which I would imagine is after most of the tourist groups are there. We saw turtles and stingrays swimming around and I can't wait to visit again next year.

Great snorkeling trip, lot's to see. The little cay is ok, not much to see except lots of hermit crabs, the water is pretty and the snorkeling had such a variety of fish with lots of colour.

Snorkeled here in January 2019 and I was pleasantly surprised by how untouched it was. We were the only boat there and I saw a ton of fish.

This is a protected area and so you are only allowed on the tiny beach. We snorkeled around the cay. There is a lovely reef and we saw turtles and stingrays. My biggest challenge was the current. I was worn out trying to snorkel around the island. Others in our group were not bothered.

This is a must visit when you are on the island. We travel over on our own boats and plan at least one day, if not more, at this private beach. It's a very small sandbar, but it's protected from the rest of the open ocean so you can hang there and snorkel/paddleboard and just hang out on your boat all day. It's so relaxing!

We chartered a boat to take us to Peterson Cay and honestly would not have gone there knowing what we know now. It was not bad but just not great. There is minimal life to see while snorkeling and most of the coral is dead. Kind of doomy there.

Any tips for renting a kayak and getting here yourself? My husband and I would like to kayak here without going on an excursion that takes you to another beach and lunch and everything else. We’d like to come and explore and snorkel on our own time

Good afternoon,
The time will vary depending on the size of boat. We hired a small boat for 4 of us and the round trip took about 2.5-3 hrs including 45 mins of snorkeling. Our guy went pretty slow because of rough water and small boat. If you go on one of the bigger tours they probably make better time. I know he said it was "9 miles" by boat from Freeport.

Looking for a nice beach near the Carnival Docks in Freeport. We are traveling with small children and would like bathroom facilities and chairs and umbrellas. Is Lacaya Beach close by?

Can you rent snorkel equipment at the park?

The park is uninhabited, just a single signpost and a picnic table (mostly buried in the sand). Our small group were the sole visitors besides the birds and sea life. Only accessible by boat, it's just 1.5 acres in the middle of beautiful blue water. Book an excursion with a guide that will take you in (a narrow road) and provide all the gear needed! Put sunscreen on before you go. No shade whatsoever. Breathtaking experience, but not recommended for beginners.

Anyone know where you can have picnic lunches made to take with you on these excursions?

I am sure the hotel where you stay or restaurants close to your hotel sell take out lunch boxes or most likely the tour operators provide the lunch or sell it.
