First of all, it is not true that the lake is contaminated. It is tested regularly by an engineer, and meets the standards of the US for swimming. The problem is that there could be items left on the bottom from when the lake was...More

but, for me, it didn't quite live up to all the hype that it gets. The road to Guadalajara is not in good repair and there is a lot of air pollution. Some of the area is still authentic but much has become too touristy.

This lake is very nice. It has certainly come a long way since I first visited many years ago. I went back a few years ago and they have added more. The lake is a bit dry and you cannot go swimming. This was a...More

The lake is much more massive than I had ever expected. The malecon in Chapala is prettier than in Aijijic. Lots of pretty flowers, fountains and very friendly people. There are several restaurants to just sit and pass the time. One thing we noticed in...More

Definitely go see Chapala, and downtown Ajijic. It is spectacular and if yearning for a USA experience, go for burgers, fries and shakes at Trip's Burger right across the street from Walmart. Only an hour from GDL and beautiful quaint lakeside community.

There are several little towns like Chapala and Ajijic and Jocotepc on the lake. Perhaps the most "famous" to tourists and ex-pats is Ajijic due to its large gringo population and many cute shops, restaurants and arty stuff in the streets and shops.

OOPS. Forgot. Try Caldwell Banker in Chapala for long term rental or I have friends in Centro Historico GDL who have a restored rental property.
