Custom-designed private tours for one or more people, economical and flexible.

After the success of our Mexico City tours, Mahsa has developed a particular range of tours specific to Oaxaca, focusing on everything from handicrafts to cooperative businesses, including village visits to meet healers, midwives, artisans and artists, trying street food, and walking tours that take you through neighborhoods, parks, markets and ancient alleys, to the side of Oaxaca beyond the sight of most tourists.

My husband and I took 2 tours with Mahsa on the 12 of December 2016 (walking) and the Southwards tour on December 17, 2016. We were very impressed with the quality and value of the 2 tours we took. From start to finish everything went seamlessly. We found Mahsa to be very personable, knowledgeable and respectful of the local people... More

Rocio was lots of fun and actually used "capricious" in describing something we were talking about. We spent two days touring with Rocio as our guide and she was anything but capricious in her attention to detail and care for oue visit in the two days we sepnt with her. We saw and talked about the artisan work, the people,... More

When we travel internationally, we always hire a guide to introduce us to the area and culture. Connecting with a local community through a professional guide has always given us a deeper experience. So we have had many guides. Mahsa, from Journeys Beyond the Surface, is special among these guides for several reasons. She is both a local, having lived... More

Mahsa took our family on two tours during our stay in Oaxaca during Christmas week 2016. We have two kids (6 and 8 years old). All of us thoroughly enjoyed the tours and spending the two days with Mahsa. We told her we were interested in food & local crafts , so she took us to markets and craft shops.... More

Exploring Oaxaca and its surrounding villages with Mahsa was wonderful. This is no ordinary guide company. Mahsa's passion for the people and culture of the region were evident as she explained to us the histories of the various artisans with their associated village customs. The trips out to the villages felt like intimate visits and were always conducted in an... More

Our day out with Mahsa was everything we could wish for. She is bright and knowledgable and good company. We had very engaging visits with craftspeople in their studios, and Mahsa was helpful in every way about everything to do with our stay in Oaxaca. Communication about arrangements was very smooth and friction-free. The best thing was being able to... More

We had the pleasure of spending 3 partial days with Mahsa. The first day was spent in Oaxaca getting a walking orientation of the town and locations of the sights we'd visit on our own, visiting and tasting in the markets (best tamale I ever had and you must try the grasshoppers), and visiting some galleries and a communal craft... Mahsa presented our family with a wonderful 4 hour walking tour of Oaxaca. We were introduced to delicious local food stands in the markets. She took us to meet local artists and showed us the best places to shop for local crafts. She even took our family to a special place for kids to read books and play. Thank you... More

I contacted Mahsa the day we arrived in Oaxaca City. I actually did not expect to get a response so quickly, but we really wanted to get out of town and experience the small pueblos. Her response was immediate and we set up a tour for Sunday. As we had a 3 year old in our group, Mahsa put together... More

I had a really valuable and insightful tour with Mahsa who was very professional and accomodating. She introduced me to several different artisans who worked in different mediums. I had the opportunity to see tin and metal work as well as weaving. Most interesting was my visit with Mahsa to see the work of Sergio Rodriguez who operates Manos Magicos,... More
