Nice place to chill out especially when you get fed up with all those fast speaking locals. Not the nicest city, still this a nice place to relax from the busy streets.

Seems more like a social club for expats living in the city than something to help travelers. Costs to borrow donated books and magazines that you can usually find in your hotel book exchanges. We arrived about five minutes before closing time and the staff on had were very interested in getting the infierno out of there instead of helping... More

Hello! I am sorry you had a less than stellar experience at the library yesterday. We do our best to help people visiting the city and make them feel welcome. We are a not-for-profit organization and we don't receive any kind of government or private funding, so membership fees are one of the ways that we cover our costs. At... More

The Merida English Library is a wonderful facility for anglophones in the city. They hold many commendable events. However I was rather disappointed with the weekly walking tour of local homes and gardens. The week we took the tour over 50 people registered. Although we were assigned to 2 groups there was little opportunity to interact and get information from... More

Dear Willie 666- Thank you for your feedback on your MEL House Tour experience. Because of the concerns you expressed, we would like to share some information with you. During each House Tour season we show over 60 homes, which all must be within a 10-minute walking radius to accommodate our guests with physical restrictions. Within this limitation, we always... This walking tour was excellent! It was approximately 3 hours in length and included visits to 3 renovated homes near the library. The tour starts with an overview of the origin of the English Library and then an explanation of the renovation of many of the original homes in this area of Merida. Very informative and a must-do! 200 pesos.

The library is lovely and the garden in the back is a beautiful place to relax. I was so looking forward to touring the homes. It was so disappointing that during one of the busy tourist seasons they didn't have any tours.

Jacquelyn, Thanks so much for visiting! We are sorry you missed the tours. We have had a lot of interest this year for tours during the holiday season, so we are going to try next year to have tours before and after Christmas. One of the difficulties is that home owners and volunteers are out of town during those dates,... More

The library publishes different numbers for their book count, ranging between 11,000 and 18,000 titles. I'll assume the number is within that range. The garden is the library's biggest asset because of the tranquility one can usually find there, especially in the "off season". MEL offers a number of different fund-raising events (it receives no governmental financial support) and depends... More

the library is a wealth of information as well as books! But most importantly, the tous of renovated homes are amazing! The tour is of 3 homes and they are stunning! When you realize the magic of renovating you will be amazed

I just went in looking to buy a few English titles to read. Was greeted by several very nice people. Found several books. They also have activities and if you're staying longer, you can join the library for more fun. Seems like a very good place.

We took their house tour and visited 3 houses. The guide was an informative English woman who lives in Merida. We learned how new generations of family often will get a piece of the existing house and in turn it gets painted a different color which is discovered by seeing the same architectural details, windows, eaves, etc. One of the... The English bookstore is like a platform, where you can enjoy a drink in the garden, but also evenings for meetups for new-native speakers and English speakers who want to practice their language with others. Around the bookstore are exceptional shopping and dining. 20 minutes walk from the Playa Mayor.
