We loved the island
Feb 2020
Great t bike around or just sit and watch the river flow by.
Plenty of good restaurants and hotels or lodging for all budgets.
A nice boat ride as well from the mainland and a good place to chill for two nights or even a week.

Irrawaddy dolphins
Nov 2019
We booked a dolphin watching trip at the hotel. A tuk tuk took us to the southern point of Khone island were a boat was waiting for us. The boat is not very comfortable. We stayed out on the water for about an hour. Our patience was rewarded, we saw several dolphins. Irrawaddy` s are very elusive and shy. You will not see them jump out of the water. The opposite side of the river is Cambodia. Most of the boats are converted fishing boats and the skippers are ex-fisherman who gave up fishing and start a dolphin watching business. The skippers obviously know where to find the dolphins, the dolphins always roam in the same neighbourhood.

Three day visit
Jan 2020
Good place to act as base to see waterfalls , dolphins and rest up . Quirky fun .. informal feels safe . Bike riding ok on bumpy roads and safe in spite of crummy state of local bikes ! Good for food and R&R .

Paceful island
Jan 2020
Very calm and paceful place. Great sunsets, nice views, authentic life of Lao people, many possibilities to bike around the island. Spectacular waterfals.

Don Det's quiet neighbour.
Jan 2020 • Solo
Don Khone is a pleasant place to relax for a few days. It's neighbour Don Det, connected by the French rail bridge, is known as the party island. The bridge is a great spot to watch the sunset from. Don Khone caters to a more mature crowd. The guest houses plus a couple of upmarket resorts occupy a strip mainly north of the bridge and many offer rooms backing on to the water. The balcony views come at an unexpected cost - noise. The channel between Don Khone and Don Det is a busy waterway, and noisy long tail boats ply it all day. It gets quiet at night, except for Saturday night when loud music from across the channel carried on till 3.30 am.
There is a good selection of restaurants along the strip, and a few travel agencies too. There is no bank or ATM on either island, and changing large kip notes can be a problem. Bicycles can be rented cheaply.
Outside the tourist strip Don Khone is a rural Lao community, reliant on farming. The south of the island is wooded with few inhabitants. At the southern tip, accessed by the bed of the old rail line is the concrete wharf once the terminus for steamers, now a good place to look out for dolphins or take a boat to get closer to them. There is a track along the east side of the island, but broken bridges make it impassable even for bicycles; it can be walked.
On the west side of the island are the beautiful falls of Somphamit and a pleasant swimming beach.

Take a bicycle to explore
Jan 2020
We found the best (not just because of the cheapest) option to rent a bike (some hotels offer them f.o.c.). For one you don’t “eat” all the dust you would get on a scooter or in a Tuck-Tuck, secondly in addition to be eco friendly you can leisurely explore the whole island, stop where you want as long you want. No fear of bikes being stolen, people are respectful, plus each bike has a specific ID painted on it referring to the rental outlet.. we biked to the Li Phi Falls as well as over to the old French Pier to go and watch the Irrawaddy dolphins.

Quiet and with different attractions
Nov 2019
Don Khone is better than Don det in a way. It is bigger and the gh area is only in the northern part. On the West : Liphi cataracts ; in the South : large panorama & dolphins (better to go by kayaking), in the East, nice walking paths and another free entrance cataract. A bicycle is needed on Don Khone, but not on Don Det (walk around for 3h - 7 km). Mama Leuah restaurant is the best advice I got from Nicolas (nkm mekong homestay in paksé)

Waterfalls and small village
Oct 2019 • Solo
I just cycled to see the waterfalls there and a bit through the rice fields. It was good to see how is it the life in small towns and enjoy the breeze. Spent around 6 hours from the north of Don Det until both waterfalls, so half a day to do the visit. Bikes can be rent anywhere for 10000 kip

Quiet island
Jun 2019 • Couples
Almost every guesthouse offered bike (all in horrible shape) rentals for just 10,000 kips a day. Other than the guesthouse road, most other roads were a bit rocky for a leisurely ride. Don Det, which has less bumpy paths, is connected by a bridge which was initially meant for rail. An old train car sits at the Don Khon end of the bridge as a reminder of this.
