The monument is consist of a statue of a fisherwoman who looks back to the sea one more time expecting her love one and plaques with all names of the fishermen who died or never cameback from their work in the see. When you see the monument in its entirety, that's very impressive. It's a moment of silence

A very interesting and emotional monument documenting all of the souls from Urk lost at sea. The plaques with names date back to the 1800's to date. Very sad and very poignant.

The statue is a poignant reminder of the lives lost at sea. Looking at the ages there are father and sons lost including children as young as 10.

I was in Urk last summer ,discovering a picturesque village ,in fact an old island swallowed by the new polder in Flevoland .The statue of the woman ,dressed in local costume ,is so dramatic ,it symbolizez the drama of the fishermen died on the sea .The wife is looking for her lover in the distance but he will never come .The big wall of 4 metres high ,behind the monument is impressive ,I could read the names of the fishermen who died ,especially in the 19 th century ...Urk is one of the oldest villages of the sea,now it is a small town on the coast of a lake .Urk is a miracle , local people still go fishing in the North Sea ...

While the statue tells a story, it is the wall with the real meaning. You read thru the names and you see many with the same last name. It makes you think of the families who lost husband and sons at the same time.

It also gives you a sense of fierceness of the water prior to the closing. As you drive towards the area, remember it was an island.

We drove our rental car from Leeuwarden, having made stops at UNESCO Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal Pumping Station and UNESCO Schokland Polder.
After free parking near the port, we joined others walking the quiet narrow streets bordered with small homes on this past Sunday morning. The colorful lighthouse sits at the end on a high-point with a large anchor planted close by. We sat on one of the benches to contemplate the sea and the 3 long rows of new windmills. In that direction, was the Visser Monument with plaques of the lost.
Our only disappointment with this beautiful port was that no restaurants were open until 2PM today.

The monument is not just the statue, but also all the plaques with the full names of deceased fishermen with their year they died and the age they reached. Impressive and something to think about when you look at the sea (although technically it is now a lake that you are looking at).

This monument is set on a higher part of the town looking out over the sea. The lady has her back turned towards the sea but seems to be looking over her shoulder to see if her loved-ones are coming back.
There is a plaque with the names of all of the fishermen from Urk who have died at sea. The view from this place is also stunning. Top attraction in Urk.
