Overview
More
El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature preserve just a few minutes from the historical city of San Miguel de Allende. The name comes from a spring-fed pool nestled in an impressive canyon. With great biodiversity, many different species of native plants and animals are in the canyon, the wetlands and the dry scrubland. El Charco hosts an extensive botanical collection made up of cacti and other succulent Mexican plants, many of which are rare, threatened or in danger of extinction. This is a place that was sanctified as a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama, where you can enjoy the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, scenic overlooks, historic sites, trails, Interactive Garden for Children, camping zone, cafeteria & gift shop, as well as different activities like guided tours, sweat-lodge, workshops, concerts, full moon ceremonies and more.

We were unable to make it for the TuTh 10-12 tour which I would recommend, so we did our own walking tour down the trails and into the cactus “greenhouse”. The gift shop was small but had a great selection of local souvenirs, A great...More

We spent three hours enjoying the beauty of the Botanical Gardens. It is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy the desert scenery. Had a lovely lunch at the restaurant. The reception called a taxi for us to return.

If you enjoy cactus plants, this is the place. Many varieties are on display. There are well maintained walking paths with nice views of the reservior, waterfowl, and the city of San Miguel.

Spent one hour here to view the indigenous plants of the area. Plants are sign posted and paths run throughout the garden. A small cafe on the premises. A great view of the town of San Miguel as the botanical garden is located well above...More

It was a good walk with lots of well marked plants. The conservatory was ok. The ride up in a cab was an adventure- we had concerns about getting back but cabs were coming and going so wasn't an issue

I did the cardio walk straight up Nunez and Homobono Street from San Fransisco. It’s a challenged but very heart healthy. The last 1/3 is flat. This is a quiet historic place. A true reserve. Besides wondering in the arid high desert botánica their shop...More

I am astounded by reviewers who complain that there is a lack of color or too many cacti at El Charco del Ingenio. Granted, if you are expecting roses you will be sorely disappointed. However, if you expect to see a wide variety of cacti,...More
