El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature preserve just a few minutes from the historical city of San Miguel de Allende. The name comes from a spring-fed pool nestled in an impressive canyon. With great biodiversity, many different species of native plants and animals are in the canyon, the wetlands and the dry scrubland. El Charco hosts an extensive botanical collection made up of cacti and other succulent Mexican plants, many of which are rare, threatened or in danger of extinction. This is a place that was sanctified as a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama, where you can enjoy the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, scenic overlooks, historic sites, trails, Interactive Garden for Children, camping zone, cafeteria & gift shop, as well as different activities like guided tours, sweat-lodge, workshops, concerts, full moon ceremonies and more.

Get away from the gringo hordes and enjoy some quiet countryside. We really enjoyed our morning here.

This is a wonderful collection of cactus and agave plants from around Mexico, including many that are endangered, and included a beautiful walk along a spectacular canyon.

We're staying in San Miguel de Allende this week and El Charcoal del Ingenio was highly recommended. We decided to do the guided tour and we're so happy we did. Pam was a fabulous guide, very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The gardens are beautiful and it was fun to learn about the native plants and history... More

The botanical garden is high on a hill, outside the centro. A 15 minute cab ride takes you away from the hustle and bustle to a stunningly beautiful natural landscape featuring the native cactus of Mexico. You enter through a charming gift shop, and can opt for a light lunch with counter service. Take water, wear a hat and comfortable... More

Went to El Charco on a Thursday. There's a free shuttle bus from Plaza Civica at 9:30 but it only has seats for 14 so you should get there about 15 minutes early. If there's not enough room it's a 40 peso cab ride. On Tuesday and Thursday there are guided tours, cost is$4 per person and well worth it.... More

You can walk, taxi or Uber to this great spot just 10 minutes from SMA. We spent just under 2 hours walking the well marked trails and wandering along the canyon and over one of the dams there (you could spend alot more time, but we went on a hot afternoon). Plant life is well marked and most everything, including... More

These expansive botanical gardens are a short cab ride outside of town and a wonderful respite after wandering the bustling streets of San Miguel. They offer a great combination of botany, wildlife, history, sculpture, and great views. We spent about two hours and were able to traverse the trails at a relatively leisurely pace, stopping to read placards, take photos,... More

We had no idea what we would experience when we started to climb up from Centro to get to this site. Although a difficult climb, it was worth it!! We were awed by this beautiful site. Hiking on the well-maintained trails we got great views of the canyon, saw an amazing variety of cacti and marvelled at the amount of... More
