El Charco del Ingenio is a botanical garden and nature preserve just a few minutes from the historical city of San Miguel de Allende. The name comes from a spring-fed pool nestled in an impressive canyon. With great biodiversity, many different species of native plants and animals are in the canyon, the wetlands and the dry scrubland. El Charco hosts an extensive botanical collection made up of cacti and other succulent Mexican plants, many of which are rare, threatened or in danger of extinction. This is a place that was sanctified as a Peace Zone by the Dalai Lama, where you can enjoy the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, scenic overlooks, historic sites, trails, Interactive Garden for Children, camping zone, cafeteria & gift shop, as well as different activities like guided tours, sweat-lodge, workshops, concerts, full moon ceremonies and more.

We built a special Brush Fire Unit for "Jardín Botánico". The people that work there are super nice. I think there's over 500 different types of cactus there. I would recommend this place to someone that likes taking walks in a garden.

Gorgeous and unusual, this 25 year old botanical preserve is restoring valuable habitat while providing a glimpse into the wildness that once prevailed. Tip: There is a free shuttle that will take you there and back on certain days of the week. It leaves from...More

This extensive site is full of native and exotic desert flora. The succulent house is particularly beautiful. The gift shop has high quality items and breakfast at the food stand was delicious!

Well worth a half day to walk the gardens, view the cacti displays, hike down the canyon, and tour La Plaza de los Quatro Vientos (Plaza of the Four Winds). Best to take a taxi or Uber to the entrance gate, then hike down the...More

We visited the gardens a couple of times while we were in San Miguel. The tour was very informative and well done. We had about 10-12 people on the tour. The guide was very knowledgeable. There are many photo opportunities. Sometimes, they hold concerts in...More

It was a hot day and I was a little foot sore, so I wasn't exactly keen for a walk through a cactus park, but, as often happens, it turned out to be a fantastic outing. Overall the grounds are a little run-down, but not...More

Wasnt expecting a beautiful walk over a canyon!! You get to enjoy an entire view of the city and you get to enjoy the mirador as well for just 40 pesos. Worth taking the 1h30 walk.

The grounds are in need of more maintenance, manicuring and tender loving care, but it is still well worth a visit to see the variety of vegetation here and stroll the trails.

Our hosts in San Miguel said most of the ex-pats they know in San Miguel have never been to El Charco. I'm not a particular fan of nature preserves, but the beautifully-maintained El Charco, perched on the top of San Miguel, blew me away. After...More

Very much enjoyed visiting Charco. It has some well laid out paths that lead to a greenhouse with a variety of cactuses. Then walked along the damn and across to see the gorge below. A nice change of pace. Bring sunscreen - it gets hot.

To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing along the lines of children's swings or entertainment. This is a botanical garden with walking paths exhibiting native plants, trees, cactus and some endangered species. You're... More

It's in the middle of a lot of open space , so you can visit the area around it, it's basically desert, not particularly beautiful. There may also be ways to get in at the end nearest San Miguel, I remember there were houses... More
