Overview
More
Maligne Lake is the largest glacially formed and fed lake in the Canadian Rockies and those remnants of the last Ice Age still cling to the cliffs, rest in the cirques and cap off the pinnacles of Maligne Lakes' fabulous ring of 3,360 meter mountains. It is the melt waters of those glaciers that give the lake its' lovely, tranquil-blue colour and that backdrop of lofty peaks which holds back the busy world and provides a calming wilderness experience. World-famous Spirit Island, on Maligne Lake is the heart and soul of Jasper National Park. Accessible only by boat this diminutive icon of the Canadian Rockies is the destination point of the scenic Maligne Lake cruise. The worldwide fame of Maligne Lake is historically and intrinsically bound to the art of Photography. Diminutive Spirit Island, resting in the hall of the Gods at the south end of Maligne Lake is, arguably the most photographed locale in the Canadian Rockies.

The boat ride to and from spirit island was ok. It was kind of long but the tour guide tried her hardest to make it interesting. The surroundings were gorgeous and when you get to the island the photo opportunities are great. I wouldn't want...More

Dear LS679, I'm so glad you enjoyed the scenery at Spirit Island and I do hope you were able to get some great shots. I would say that we often have families with small children onboard particularly during the high season. Our guides are skilled...More

Cruise is 1 hour round trip. Gets very bust so good to get tickets on line or by phone . We disembark on Spirit Island which was made famous by the Kodak chromofilm ads in the 1960's. Lovely lodge with gift shop, food, bathrooms. Decks...More

Dear deedee1951, I'm so glad you enjoyed your time at Maligne Lake. We find a lot of guests remember the photo of Spirit Island that graced the north wall of Grand Central Terminal in 1960. It's definitely a world-class destination. Just to clarify the cruise...More

So dull. It's just a long ride on a boat to a small island. This is something that you can skip. The area is pretty and fun to see, but the boat ride is a pass. The drive to this area was filled with multiple...More

Dear Evelyn D, We definitely run the gamut around here when it comes to weather. Some days are "picture perfect" sunny days but I wouldn't say that good photo-taking opportunities are necessarily limited to sunny days. Clouds and rain can add an extra dimension to...More

For what we paid I think this cruise was really overrated. It's a 30 min narrated boat ride out to Spirit Island and then you get 15 mins on the island to take photos and then it's a 30 min boat ride back to the...More

Dear rach_lock, You're right that there are a lot of lakes out there but we truly feel that Maligne Lake and Spirit Island are among the gems of the Canadian Rockies. Of course, we don't just provide the way to get to Spirit Island; we...More

Hi Kevin N, Thank you for your review! We're sometimes lucky with wildlife sightings on the cruise but typically animals aren't seen along the shore - they seem to prefer less densely forested areas. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't feel the premium cruise...More

This tour is run by Brewsters in Jasper and it would be best to contact them as to when they start the tour in May and sometimes they limit it to weekends until full tourist season in July and August.
