    Must See
Was on a private tour. Exceptionally scenic spot. Iconic lighthouse, waves crashing on the rocks, strong winds blowing. The history of the tunnels was fascinating. If you are hiking the East coast trail and if you time it right, the cafe is a delicious and welcome stop.

    Fantastic
This is a must see for a few Good reasons. First, the historic happenings here are astounding. I never heard anything regarding the goings on here during WW 2. 2 Second, the ocean waves crashing along the rugged coast line is fantastic. You haven’t seen waves till you’ve seen them here. The only drawback was the parks Canada bathrooms and cafe were closed. Unbelievable!

    Go EAST!
Catch the sunrise as it touches the most eastern point of North America (sorry Greenland, not counting you). Large site maybe 15 km outside of St. John's. Many sites including eastern most marker, start of Transcanada Trail, the military fort, clifts and roaring surf.

    Great walking adventure.
4 of us came here, 2 are locals, and they had been here before, so they wanted to show us this amazing place. We walked along the boardwalk, and had somewhat of a view at 2 lookouts. There are signs warning of danger, and not to go past the boardwalk area, as on bad-weather days, waves can come up close to this area. The view didn't start-off great, as it was a foggy, drizzly morning, but we could still see down to the water's edge, and no more, but we still enjoyed our walk. We saw the barracks and the cannons, and continued the upward climb to the lighthouse. It can be a bit hard for people like myself who aren't used to walking alot, and then having the incline. Also, I'm not fond of heights, so found it a bit tricky. The other 3 sat up by the lighthouse, on a grassy mound area, a little ways from the edge the edge, which wasn't what I was interested in! I descended down to the café area, to sit on the steps, and then 3 of us went into the gift shop. With the foggy day, it kind of set the scene of a mystical day, especially with the foghorn letting out it's eerie sound, here and there. On leaving, the weather had cleared and we could see further out into the ocean, and the land north of here.

The fog gave our visit to Cape Spear a mystical quality
Our first trip to Newfoundland and Cape Spear was the first thing on our bucket list. 30 years ago, my husband and I sat and watched the sunset on a beach on the furthest west coast of Canada, and this week we stood on the furthest East point of Canada (North America actually!) at Cape Spear, NL. In a perfect world we'd have watched the sun rise and we heard there were whales spotted out there but arrived to thick fog. It was still magical, if a little spooky, walking in and out of the fog and climbing up to the lighthouse. My photos have a mystical quality to them. Grab a latte and a yummy treat at the quaint little coffee shop up there (opens at 10am). Best date square I have ever had! **just a heads up: the full walk involves a LOT of stairs. I believe there is accessible access up to the newer lighthouse and coffee shop.

    Stunning area!
Stunning area! Incredible history and absolutely beautiful views. So cool to be on the furthest point east of Canada too. We also got lucky enough to spot a whale! Definitely a must visit when in St. John’s, it’s worth the ride out of the way, but bring a coat, it gets chilly!

    Excellent scenery and signage
This was a fantastic site. Lots of easy walking trails, good signage, a place for coffee. There’s a local listening to local music in the parking lot who likes to talks. He has a great local accent. He says he’s there every weekend for whale watching.

    Two lighthouses in one spot
I think this place is very pretty and has a couple things to see. At the bottom of the hill are a gift shop and restrooms. At the gift shop, you can pay the admission fee of $7.50 CAD if you wish to go inside the top lighthouse. From here you climb up steps to the newer lighthouse which is closed but you can still go up to for a view. There is also an art gallery here with lighthouse paintings of many lighthouses on the Canadian coast. They were nice to see. There is also a cafe here with various muffins and an outdoor seating area with a view. From here you can walk up more steps to the oldest lighthouse which is restored inside to what it looked like in its heyday. There was no indoor plumbing when the lighthouse keeper lived here until 1955 and housed 4 people. The steps to the lighthouse are gradual and not steep so they aren’t hard to climb. If you wish, you can also take a trail to the bunkers used here. Ample free parking. This is a worthwhile stop.

    A must see
For sure a stop you should make when in st. Johns. Amazing views and a great spot to take in the landscape and have a snack maybe. Nice to walk around and have a little hike. We are travelling with a toddler and this is not stroller accessible but with a carrier it's very doable.

    Beautiful photos with the lighthouse
Cape spear lighthouse is a great tourist spot in st johns - definitely a place you want to visit. It gets very windy here and would be smart to bring your coats. Nice place to walk around, take in the sights and landscapes, get to see a lot of big waves crash into rocks, chilly but a nice spot for walk and photos. Photos with the lighthouse in the background turn out to be very beautiful - worth checking out

Easily one of the nicest attractions to see in NFLD, we arrived around noon, on a Monday and the parking lot was fairly-full, but the grounds are so large, my wife and I never felt crowded or bothered. The weather was also idyllic, with no wind at all, pure-sunshine and no clouds; if anything, it was a touch chilly, but more-than comfortable.

As we were driving up, we could see some whales and they did not leave for the entire 2+ hours we were there (they moved up and down the coast). To see the breach, blow and splash their tails, was something special indeed.

The lighthouses were also special, with the original one being quite unique and the modern one being a nice photo opportunity; combined with the coastal views, you can get some phenomenal shots.

They also have some bits of history at Cape Spear, with a WWII cannon still on the grounds and a little museum that commemorates Cape Spear's use during the wars. Make sure you bring a comfortable pair of shoes, as there's a lot of walking on stairs and rough ground!

The views are out of this world. As a bonus, you also saw whales! I'm glad that I came during a time without the hordes of people that normally you would encounter.

This place needs to be reburnished, as the stairs going up to the light house are not even.

I go to Cape Spear every time I visit St. John's because it's simply such a beautiful place. This is the eastermost point of land in North America. The coastline is wild and rugged, and on windy days you need to dress warmly. In June and July, if you're lucky, there will be whales swimming around, sometimes very close to shore. We lucked out on our last visit - there were at least half a dozen of them right up close to the rocks, and they put on quite a show, even breaching a couple of times.

We decided to visit this site one morning as it was a beautiful sunny day. We had been there before but never got out of our vehicle. This day was different for sure. We took our time, walked around the site and up by the lighthouses. Hard to believe that it is the most easterly point. We even watched some fishing vessels do what they do. Just a nice site on a nice day.

We make sure we get to Cape Spear each time we go to Newfoundland (about once per year) as it always seems different. One time it was very foggy and was particularly enjoyed it was almost mystical. Again, bexsure to take a jacket as a chilly wind can be blowing.

We went for sunrise to be able to be some of the first people in North America to see the sun that morning at the Eastern most point of the continent! It was windy & a bit chilly but amazingly beautiful! This is one of the most picturesque spots we visited during our 5 weeks in Newfoundland! The sunrise, the rock cliffs & the site with both the old & new lighthouses was wonderful! Parking was easy & walks are well maintained. We stayed for a couple of hours & would have stayed longer had there been restrooms available! LOCKED restrooms was a HUGE disappointment for a place that’s very popular for sunrise!! The parking lot was full at sunrisr but many people left quickly due to the lack of facilities available. UNLOCK the restrooms for sunrise!!!

I have wanted to go to Cape Spear for a long time, and I am so glad that I finally had the chance to! I heard from many that you do not need to spend much time here, but I was able to spend hours here. It really depends on how foggy it is, I was lucky to go on an afternoon that was not foggy. You have the chance to tour the old lighthouse and there are many informational displays to look at. There are also many walking trails - I saw many whales during my stay!

During the summer I was able to get there through the hop on/hop off bus. If you don't have a car, you can also take a taxi, but it was pricey.

A must do while in St. John's!

Cape Spear Lighthouse is located on Cape Spear, just outside of St John's. It's the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and the second oldest surviving lighthouse in all of North America.
The lighthouse offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and is open to the public for tours from June to September. When Canadian Travel Writers were there we were amazed by the scenery and how close it was to the city.
