Overview
More
Beginning in 1773, hundreds of ships carrying thousands of Scottish immigrants began arriving at Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia, Dr. Thomas McCulloch, came ashore in 1805 and soon found himself leading a monumental change in the lives of 19thcentury Nova Scotians. Visit McCulloch’s 200-year-old brick home and explore exhibits that detail how one man’s passion launched him on a journey to create public education in this province. We are located at 86 Haliburton Road (Genealogy Centre) and 100 Haliburton Road (Museum) in Pictou, Nova Scotia. We can provide guided tours, or an informative self guided tour. We also promote local history by offering exhibits about our community, our families, and the history of Pictou County at the Genealogy Centre. Research requests and genealogy keeps us busy all year long! Our extensive research, archival, and library collection is a valuable resource for researchers, students, historians, and genealogists.

The House is well maintained and tells the story of Rev. Thomas MacCulloch and his efforts to establish Pictou Academy. The Centre is a treasure trove for persons interested in researching their Scottish history.

This maybe a good site for local grammar school children but had very little to offer for adult history buffs. I felt like we were a burden to the guide who had very poor knowledge of the site.More

Nice little house but nothing to it. Wasn't even worth the modest $5 entrance fee. There was virtually no furniture and appliances. And the few things that were there weren't original to Dr. McCulloch. For example, they had a top hat on display because he...More

The Doctor who settled here some 200 years ago was quite a Scholar and was impressed with Him starting Public Education here in the province. The Home is beautifully restored and so much to see.

We went to research shipping information and although the detail we were seeking wasn't available, the files they did have were very comprehensive. Anyone seeking historical information would find this a well worthwhile visit.
