We planned our itinerary by visiting the Franciscan Sanctuary of Monte Mesma in the morning and that of the Madonna del Sasso in the afternoon. Once the afternoon arrived, we would have liked to reach the Sanctuary along the Sentiero degli Scalpellini which starts from Briallo, but the heat and the position perched on a large granite rock wall made us give up. We therefore opted to reach it by car. The road is quite comfortable and once you reach the top, parking is free. In the short walk to get to the sanctuary you initially find a beautiful relaxation/picnic area in the shade of large chestnut trees. A little further on there is also a bar and public toilets. Given the clear day, once we arrived in the church square we were literally captivated by the spectacular view of Lake Orta and beyond. You could even clearly see the silhouettes of Milan's skyscrapers!
We then visited the church which houses beautiful frescoes inside, and the miraculous statue of the Madonna degli Scalpellini.
In the square in front of the church there is a questionable work of modern art.

Well worth the drive especially if you enjoy hairpin corners. The drive would be pretty intimidating if you managed to meet traffic at the wrong spot but road certainly didn't seem busy despite being July school holidays. The views are amazing. Playground out back of the church for the children. Would be Great spot for a picnic and was pretty cool during the lightening storm when we were there. Can't comment on the church as it was closed when we were there. didn't se any other way to get there than car (or bike for the super fit) not sure if penny H review recommending cable car was wrong madonna del Sasso but certainly no cable car that I could see. GPS from San guilio Orta wanted to take us up the hairpins but we ended up forking right and following road signs which take you up the bus route which was much more relaxing drive even though much longer. Came down the hairpins just for fun.

I noticed the church high on the hill whilst visiting Orta San Giulio on the other side of the lake. After leaving Orta we decided to drive the complete circuit of the lake and seeing signs to the sanctuary we started the climb (in the car!). It's a long and windy road to the top but the scenery is almost alpine as you get closer. There's plenty of car parking spaces either at the church or just before, plus toilets and snack bar. There's also a land train that comes up from Pella at the bottom of the hill - not sure of the timetable or cost but it was at the top when we arrived. Unfortunately the church was closed and there are no signs advising opening times. However, it's the views you come here for and they're certainly spectacular (more so if you have binoculars), with views along the whole lake and across to the summit of Mottarone where the cable car goes up from Stresa on Lake Maggiore. We sat there for a while taking in the tranquility of it all before the return hairpins! Would have given this an "excellent" review if we'd been able to look inside the church.

you can go up by car, by cable car or on foot. Cable car one way EUR 4,70 and return EUR 7,20. You can go up by cable car and return on foot, which is a nice walk among trees with views of Lake Maggiore.
The church is easily accessible from the cable car, but there are many steps.
The church outside doesn't show all the beauty it is inside. On the way, you'll see beautiful sculptures of the Last Supper in real size.
Definitely worth the climb, even if it's a cloudy day.

The location and views on to the surrounding hills and lake Orta below make this a must-visit place while in the area. The church is fantastic inside and out and the park area surrounding the church invites you to linger sit and read or just enjoy

The vista is spectacular, the church is phenomenal, the adventure is worthy. Visible from Orta San Giulio it stands high on granite cliffs overlooking Lago Orta. Its a challenge to get to unless you have Waze or Google Maps but worth the effort. Picnic, sightseeing, quiet time, photography, cathedral beauty - its got all of it

We could see this church perched on top of sheer granite cliffs from Orta San Giulio where we were staying. So we set off to find it, not even knowing its name... Using our initiative we managed it and were rewarded with a magnificent panorama of Lake Orta. Highly recommended.

A brief stop at the Sactuario is absolutely worth the (a little difficult) drive. We visited on a Saturday morning when the church was open to tour. The church is just as spectacular as the views from its location above Lake Orta.

It's worth the very difficult drive to get up to the church. We were disappointed to find it locked up tight, but not surprised as many reviews had warned us that it has very haphazard hours. But the view was surreal and well worth the effort to get there.
