WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all.

ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

This is a great way to visit all sorts of boutique stores in a confined district. Lots of wonderful places to eat all sorts of ethnic foods and drink as well as visiting retail stores. Plan on 2-3 hours or more. Great way to spend time with a significant other.

This market has everything, restaurants, shops, bars, and it is open at night! You can just walk around and jump from one place to another such as shopping in the afternoon, enjoying happy hour in one bar, dining in one restaurant, dessert and coffee in another, and finish off the night by walking by the Parliament or the Rideau canal!... I've been to Ottawa several times and I make sure I go to the ByWard Market each and every time, no matter what time of year. The stands provide fresh food and artifacts for purchase. There are often buskers around. You can always find something to eat for everyone in this area.

Although I have been there so many times, the ByWard Market is always a must when visiting Ottawa. The last visit was in May and all the farmers and flower suppliers were there with their inviting products ! Strolling in the streets of ByWard is always pleasant and one can always stop for coffee or for a beer or a... More

We were here on Victoria Day weekend and it was hopping. There was a traditional market (fruit, flowers, etc) surrounded by local shops and brand name chain stores. I found it to be a fun place to people watch and grab some gifts. I also highly recommend grabbing a sweet treat at Beaver Tails (see separate review).

Good place to eat and shop. There are lots of little gift shops selling all things Canadian, from silk scarfs, maple syrup, maple leaves set in frames, leather good and even get your name on a grain of rice! It also has lots of different types of foods, curry, pizza, breakfast, coffee, sweets & chocolate.

If you are driving through, the place looks lively and fun. Walking through it though, doesn't yield much satisfaction. There are so many homeless people and people begging for money! It is a sad commentary on this town! Restaurants that I tried were nothing special, and I would not recommend going there without deciding where to eat and making a... More
