Attended this excellent classical opera, first performed in Paris in December, 1693. Wonderful music, sets, and costumes by a thoroughly professional cast; in the best traditions of the performances that Opera Atelier specializes in. Well worth the visit!

Baroque opera is never going to appeal to large numbers of people, but all opera lovers should sample its strange delights if they get the (rare) chance. There's always lots of good classical music to be heard in Toronto, but Opera Atelier at the Elgin Theatre really is special, and worth international travel to experience. The company's name is a... For thirty years Opera Atelier has been bringing operas from the baroque and classical eras to Toronto. The group has also performed at Gliimerglass Opera in Cooperstown, in Versailles, Salzburg and Milan, among other places. Their standards, as seen in the recent production of Mozart's Lucio Silla at the Elgin Theatre, are very high, and the singers they attract are... More

It's still out there! It's flourishing now in Toronto's Opera Atelier. Turning heads around the world, with recent invitations from Milan, Vienna and Versailles. Classic works from the baroque era done almost like the original work was. Lavish sets and costumes, carefully fashioned librettos, strong voices and characterizations, a live orchestra (complete with lutes), a baroque choir in the wings,... More

Opening night for Armide was absolutely incredible. The orchestra and chorus were on point. The costumes were vibrant in their jewel like tones. As always, the cast members are the most beautiful people pulling off these amazing feats of vocal dexterity and dance. This organization deserves every accolade they have received. This is not your stodgy style of opera -... More

Costumes were stunning, story wonderful and signing excellent! For me, it didn't have the same magic as seeing marionettes perform The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in Salzburg, Austria. I loved Papageno so much in the marionette version that I had to have one of my own! Perhaps the use of strings and the like made his bumbling... More

This is the 12th show of The Magic Flute that I have seen performed by Opera Atelier. It never disappoints. Amazing costumes and staging! And Olivier L. as Papageno is so human and funny!!

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
