Troops once gathered at Champ-de-Mars before they were sent overseas to fight for the freedoms we enjoy today.

This Square has everuything around it; a large Greco-Roman Stately Bank Head Office (BMO), a PostModern Bank Building in Shiny Black Glass (Natl Bank) , the Residence of the Arch-Cardinal of Montreal, the Notre Dame Cathedral and Basilica (in the back, often overlooked), two great 10 story turn of the Century Concrete Buildings with Red Limestone Facade and Gargoiles, a... This was the place where Montreal's garrison practiced their military skills. Now it's a big lawn behind City Hall, but if you use your imagination you can still hear the soldiers drill. There's a trench with some of the old city walls excavated. With its Metro station, Champ-de-Mars is now one of the entry points to old Montreal. Cross the... More

This is a park behind the Hotel de Ville (City Hall). There are some visible remnants of the original city wall, otherwise very little to see of a historical nature.

There is a Metro-stop and Bixi stand nearby. We just sat for a time on the benches and enjoyed the wide open space with the view on the town hall.

This garden bears the same name like the one next to the Eiffel tower in Paris. However, it is not comparable to it by any means. It is an enormous lawn without much garden work to report.

Formerly a military parade ground, the park is located on the North side (behind city hall) and location of the original city fortification walls. Using the underground subway, called the METRO, the Champ-de-Mars Station gives an easy walking access to Montreal's history.

Champ-de-Mars is an awesome place to visit. Its panoramic views by day or night are amazing. I used to go at least once a month just to catch the beauty of Montreal's downtown core. During the summertime you can stroll in the nice and freshly cut grass and just admire the natural ambiance.

I saw a name on the map and was expecting find some kind of square suitable for military parades or something to justify that grand name. Well, I kind of had a hard time believing that this plain big lawn in front of the City Hall (or, technically, behind) actually has it's own name. Even if that place has some... More

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighbourhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
