I've traveled this route twice. Once in 2013 and again in 2015. I'll be headed back again this year in August and September. This is a beautiful drive through the Yukon and NWT tundra. It is as others have said, a tire eating road if you drive too fast. The calcium chloride is quite messy when it's raining. I wouldn't... More

we first heard about the dempster while traveling thru the maritimes, met a couple who recommended it highly! in 2014 we ventured from anchorage over top of the world, thru dawson city, past dempster in a loop south thru whitehorse then back into AK. now we were ready! rented a camper mounted on a 2015 ford xlt super duty 4... We drove the Dempster Highway from Dawson City to Inuvit, the land of the midnight sun. Before heading out, stop at the Northwest Territory Dempster Highway Visitor Centre in Dawson City to get a map, and get weather and road conditions. Most locals will discourage you from driving this lonely stretch of highway through the Yukon and NWT wilderness. It... More

Quite a feat putting this highway over mountains and on a permafrost base. Good hiking along the way. Several rest stops. Very, very dusty. If you are traveling with an open bed truck suggest you cover luggage with plastic.

Rental Cars can go anywhere. Northwest Territory Visitor Center in Dawson City was very helpful and showed us encouraging pictures of tiny little smart cars on the Dempster. We bought it. We carefully drove a Nissan Altima (thank you un-named, unwilling and unknowing rental car company) in early June to Inuvik in approximately 10 hrs with no damage. Be sure... More

Take a truck or SUV, and drive up the Dempster highway, at least to Tombstone Park (100km up), or North Fork Pass. Beyond that, you want to take 2 spare tires and an extra jerry can of gas. The Dempster is a truly legendary, beautiful highway . . . dirt road, mountains into tundra, technicolour fall colours (mid- to later... More

I was fortunate enough to make this journey with a friend, as part of her bucket list. We made our journey towards the end of September, and glad we didn't leave it any later due to the snow and ice on our return, but isn't that what you expect when you drive across the arctic circle? The extremes of weather... More

Drove the Dempster in my Subaru, Forester from beginning to end and loved every kilometre. The scenery is dazzling and keeps changing as you travel north. I recommend getting the Dempster Highway Guide from visitors centre in Dawson or have Yukon Tourism send it to you. They also have guides listing the animals to be seen, flora and fauna and... More

Awesome road along gorgeous Yukon and Northwestern Territories scenery. A very nice highway with a lot of marvelous spots to enjoy and photograph. The highway is usually quite well-groomed. When there is a lot rain it can get quite muddy with a lot of potholes. The road is good to drive also for a regular car. What I was concerned... More
