Fantastic day out with the family.
Oct 2021
Fantastic day out with the kids. We thoroughly enjoyed the Norman village, even though there was a decidedly unwoke emphasis on gory punishments! The animals made it seem really authentic. The extra things, like the toy museum, and the Halloween trail were also great fun. It was a great day out, and the tomato soup in the cafe was absolutely delicious.

Fun for kids of all ages
Oct 2021
Not much of the original castle remains but an impressive recreation of the wooden buildings within the castle give you a real understanding of castle life. Real wood fires add to the atmosphere. The chapel is beautifully done as is the great hall. Lots of hands on activities for kids of all ages (even 30/40 year old ones) to enjoy. The castle is also home to lots of rescue animals who are extremely tame, a great chance to get to know some deer, goats and peacocks plus chickens and geese. Buy a bag (or two) of food but keep one hidden until you get into the outer bailey as these animals are great at getting all the food. Lovely to stroke a deer. Add to this a toy museum and a good day out.

Hidden gem off the M11
Sep 2021
We stopped off here to break up a journey from Norfolk to London and weren't disappointed! It was very quiet when we visited (Weds afternoon in September) and we found the site peaceful and tidy, it was lovely to see all the animals wandering around. We learned a lot and had a good go at grinding some flour (!!) Thanks for a quirky afternoon.

JUST AS ENJOYABLE AFTER MANY YEARS
Aug 2021
Hadn’t visited for may years, since my daughter was small, but found the experience was just as enjoyable for me & the wife. To see other families with small children enjoying the experience was also great to see. Found the entrance price good value for money considering the costs it must incur to run the facility & employ staff. The price for food & drink was also very reasonable we found. Well done to all.

A hands on experience, real gem.
Aug 2021 • Family
Brilliant day out, a real gem. Our 2 and 5 year old loved it. Feeding the animals, climbing up battlement areas, going into prisons - all brilliant. The toy museum, horror area and little dinosaur area were also great. Very hands on experience and the kids ran around for hours. With children, you would need at least 2 hours. Another bonus is that you can take your own picnic. We will visit again.

Rip off

Listen, if you want to take your kids somewhere to feed goats and chickens there must be better places around here.
The edifice is neglected and definitely unimpressive. Entrance fee is robbery for what is on offer.
All in all a profoundly disappointing experience!

Im sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit to us. I did notice you came alone to us and not with children as we do pride ourselves as a family historical open air hands on attraction for both young and old . The gate admission post Covid lock down has been kept at the same price and this after not being open for a year and bit was a hard decision to make as a business which had no money coming in and staff to employ during this period , so to say we are a rip of is very misleading in fact we are very competitively priced compared to other attractions in this area and many say in reviews on here we are great value for money and a fantastic day out . I hope people reading all reviews will make their own mind up and see that the vast majority people visiting us on multiple times have a great day out.

Good fun but needs updating
Aug 2021 • Family
Grandma and grandad took us all out for a day out at Stansted mountfitchet castle and toy museum mainly because I went there when I was a child and we wanted to see what it was like 30 odd years later. We had a good time although my 7 year old son got abit bored.

PROS: the deers walking around are lovely, the cafe food is nice, the castle is still good fun and you do gain knowledge of what it was like back then, the toy museum is bigger and better (very good and well laid out) and the staff were friendly. Dinosaur area is very small but is good fun and the haunted walkway on one level was very funny and entertaining. Fossil hunting and the digger area were good fun.

CONS: Parking was Def issue at first, a man in a fluorescent jacket were showing you where to park for alittle while. But one park and display machine showed a £5 for four hours when another machine showed £2.00 for 4 hours! Why isn't the car park for the museum free?

£66 to get into a man made castle was abit steep, the haunted house (one upstairs) should have been free, no kids playground, could do with a slide going down the hill. There were hardly any signage to know where you are going we had to ask staff where to go, toilets are pretty far away from the entrance, alot of areas need updating.

Not all of props fit in scenes (that's just me been particular). I think the toy museum needs updating maybe with some newer 1990s/2000s toys and the world war volume noises need to be turn down as my child has hearing difficulties and he Def didn't like that, we pretty much had to leave that room straight away, (no need to be that loud).

Overall we did have a good experience, my son did enjoy himself after a while, I liked it, my wife, grandad and Grandma liked it too.

For Kids! even old ones
Jul 2021
OK when my wife sees castle on the sign were off, this is not what she was thinking it was going to be like, but after a good ribbing by me we decided to take a peak anyway. Well the castles not much to see but of all the castles we visited none showed the middle, lower class living conditions more than Mountfitchet. The artifacts "many were interactive" of the time period were accurate, the children that were visiting and there were many were having a blast. The vast amount of animals walking around trying to steal your feed bag were absolutely precious, the chickens the, peacocks, the goats and my favorites the little deer walking around. All in All it made for a fun afternoon albeit a lot less formal than most castles.

Perfect for all ages
Jul 2021 • Family
An amazing place for all age groups. My husband took our children and my step son here (ages 1,5,12) and was concerned that the eldest would be bored - however there was plenty to keep them all entertained and it was fantastic value for money. They were enthralled by the catapult and the jail as well as looking at all the different toys in the museum, the ghost/ghouls trail and the dinosaurs - not to mention all the lovely goats and chickens roaming free. A brilliant trip which is also educational! We will spread the word about your wonderful attraction. Car park prices are good. Also a co-op nearby for picnic food.
