Not far from the Islamic republic of the Koudeiland islands and full of beauty and wildlife everywhere.

To see the remains of the whaling industry, completely rusted and decaying, against the beauty of the place (with all of the animals surrounding it) is really haunting. It's wonderful to see everything decaying (and gives us hope for the environment's future), but it is interesting to see how these hearty souls lived. While beautiful, the environment is rough and isolated...even in the summer. So understanding how these people lived is fun to learn.
Definitely a must see place...if for no other reason than to learn from our mistakes of the past!

In the end this whole place was built to industrially kill whales. While one might be impressed by the way that was done and there are lots of explanations to help you, this was mass slaughter. So see this as a monument of myopic thinking.

Mostly wreckage is left over, but is open for walking through and reflecting. Several ships are wrecked there as well as the actual whale processing machinery. Seals now own the island, and they literally will not move out of your way. It is your job to walk around them! When we were there, the baby elephant seals were all over just basking on the shore. The farting, growling, and yawning were really loud and quite funny!

My wife and I recently visited this abandoned whaling station. Our expedition leaders gave us a detailed description of the site, history, and people who once worked at this station. Lots of history to see & explore. A great visit when in the area.

Most of the dangerous stuff like asbestos has been removed from the Grytviken Whaling Station so that you can wander around the rusting buildings and storage towers used by the whalers in safety. You cannot go inside any of the buildings except those approved by the station. The wrecks of old whaling ships stranded on the shore make for super photographs as do the elephant seals lolling about the place. It is a definite snapshot of the past.

The abandoned Grytviken Whaling Station with the many rusty machines, worn out buildings and tanks were the icons for photo-takers during their visit there. Apart from the history behind the scene, the nice scenery and wildlife around the area were the "must see" items during our visit. Highly recommended.

South Georgia is an amazing place. Fantastic scenery and amazing wildlife. The whaling station at Grytviken is one of many abandoned whaling stations spread across South Georgia. Lots of photo material.

This is nothing short of a dream location for photographers. Lots of abandoned machines, rusted shells of buildings and tanks. Interestingly, the property is now overtaken by seals sunning themselves or seeking shelter in storms.

We stopped here on our Pontant cruise, you can do a walking tour of the old whaling station and learn about its history and processes. Old whaling ships and vats add to the atmosphere of this abandoned station. Climb the hill for a nice view over the station and harbour. Also pay your respects to Earnest Shackleton lonely grave
