What a thrill to be at the gravesite of this amazing leader. The following quote by a distinguished Antarctic explorer says it all: “For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.” – Antarctic explorer, Sir Raymond Priestly. If you want to read about true adventure at its finest read about the Shackleton expedition.

As you can see from the picture, the grave is nothing spectacular at all but the surrounding nature is but that is so 20m from the grave as well.

What a thrill to visit the grave of one of your heroes. Sir Ernest Shackleton was one of the greatest leaders to ever live. He wasn't the best at exploration, but he led every single one of his sailors to make it through their perilous journey. The grave is well marked and well kept. No sense posting another pic as mine looks like all of the others. Definitely a MUST DO!

Grytviken is a pretty unassuming place and certainly not what I was expecting, but standing at The Boss's modest grave and drinking a dram of Shackleton's whisky in his honour was a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Even if you do not go to South Georgia and Antarctica, I recommend reading a book about Shackleton. He led what might be the most fantastic rescue operation in history. There were many phases to this rescue story, each phase more spectacular than the previous. If you like history, it is an amazing experience standing gravside.

Located on the outskirts of Grytviken, this simple cemetery holds a rather modest grave to explorer Ernest Shackleton, fellow crew member Frank Wild and graves belonging to Norwegian pioneers of the island and whalers.

Although not native to South Georgia, it was decided that Shackleton be buried there due to his association with the island. Its a stone white grave with an epitaph on the front and a poem on the back. The cemetery surrounded by its white picket fence is dwarfed by the surrounding hills but nonetheless is an impressive and inspiring place to visit..

If you are any kind of history fan,m you need to see Shackleton’s grave site. Shackleton left his ship’s crew mates to travel in a small boat (19 days) to South Georgia and then cross over the island from the west coast to the east coast to find some people help him rescue his crew mates. He made this epic journey and was able to save his ship mates. When he died on another Antarctica trip, his wife requested he be buried in South Georgia. This is his gravesite. Worth a visit for history buffs.

One of the main goals of my Antarctic adventure was to go to South Georgia where Shackleton made his final adventure after being stuck in the Antarctic ice. His fast friend, Wild, is buried next to him. We had a small ceremony with some fine scotch whiskey to honor Shackleton's bravery. Around the cemetery there were a load of huge elephant seals and some molting king penguins. What an honor to have been there.

This tiny churchyard with graves of whalers holds the grave of Sir Earnest and his right hand man, Frank Wild. Shackleton was known as 'The Boss' to his men and it has been a long tradition to raise a glass of his favourite drink - a scotch whiskey - by the grave. My wife and I took a flask with us and did just that and drank - "to the Boss".
