Interesting place. the akhali (new) Shuamta has beautiful frescoes inside. the dzveli (old) complex is quite interesting itself but it must be restored in the interiors

well signposted from either direction - there are are 2 monastries - the 'new' one dating from 1500 is the first one you see, the "old" one dating from about 500 is at the end of the road. Workers had just about finished putting in new cobble-stone paving to the old monastry when we visited - it was an easy... More

It is a very beautiful place with amazing views. It is one of the best sightseeings in Kakheti region so I advice you to visit it and go to its surroundings too.

I would rate this attraction somewhere between "average" and "very good". If you happen to be passing by anyway, there's no reason why you should not stop and have a look. The new part is in use (I think by 17 nuns) and while not particularly memorable, still a nice site. No photography is allowed inside. You'll need to ring... More

Have to ring the bell for entry and cover up completely. Pretty but heavily restored. Great ruins in the garden. The monastery up the road, Dzveli Shaumta, looks as if it is ruined but, as always, there's a guardian and lit candles blackening the walls

I visited only old Shuamta, which was full of crowd for Saturday. Its a good idea to schedule visits during weekdays, to avoid school kids. Place is very quiet, in the shadows, consists of 3 old churches, almost bare inside, located next to each other. Not as empowering as others, but worth visiting, as located very close to Telavi.

the upper monastery is quite rundown. no frescoes or icons left...didn't visit the lower one. Worth a 15 minute visit since its just off the main Tbilisi-Telavi road, but that's about it.
