About
Newlyn Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery, it opened in 1895 financed by John Passmore Edwards the gallery was conceived as an exhibition venue for the Newlyn School of Art; the works of which are now largely located at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in nearby Penzance. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped, and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. With two venues we can offer a wide and varied programme, showcasing the best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists in the region. The admission fee allows entry to both galleries (Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange) and the ticket lasts for one year, allow a two-hour visiting time for both galleries with a 20 minute walk between them. The front desk and shop are manned by a team of volunteers and we often working with community groups leading outreach programmes. The Garden Café is situated at the back of the gallery and has beautiful views across Mount’s Bay.

- RuthF4 contributionsDead - Mans Fingers by Nicola Bealing - Fabulous Exhibition at Newlyn Art GalleryVisited the Newlyn Art Gallery with friends in May, we attended the excellent exhibition on currently by Nicola Bealing...Dead-Mans Fingers...fantastic paintings with such detail and I loved the installation...well worth a visit. Stopped by the gallery cafe for a much needed coffee and toasty to discuss the exhibition. The front desk staff where so helpful and friendly. Worth a visit when visiting the Penzance or Newlyn : )Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 May 2024
- Pat U3 contributionsHope to return because its worth another visit.Visited today for the first time and felt welcome straight away. The main exhibition (Nicola Bealing) is amazing and full of impact. It's split into two with paintings on the ground floor and further work upstairs. Nothing really prepares you for the incredible sculptures hanging everywhere and I spent a lot of time lost in the atmosphere. I wouldn't know where to begin to describe it.I'm really glad I didn't miss out on the picture room downstairs as the graphite drawings (Jason Walker) made me feel quite emotional. They just seem very gentle and something about it moved me to tears. The gallery has a cafe with good coffee, pleasant staff and a nice outdoor area.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 June 2024

High impact, especially the ground floor paintings, which were thought provoking and challenging. The 1st floor exhibits were sensational. Well worth a visit.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 July 2024

Small gallery with an interesting exhibition. I was expecting that there would be some history of the Newlyn artists but I realise this is a contemporary space. I was quite disappointed. I have an Art Pass so I didn't have to pay. It is in a beautiful setting by the sea, no parking so you will need to park nearby. Friendly staff

This is a great place for people with a passion for modern art, and can appreciate this.
The gallery is not to be confused with other establishments in that it does not house the original Newlyn artist’s paintings. (Which we knew before visiting, but wanted to see the gallery anyway.)
Staff were friendly, but sadly this type of art ‘went over our heads a little’, and whilst this is definitely NOT a negative review, it is written to help those people, who like us, may be a little more “mainstream” in the art they can understand and appreciate.
The building itself is lovely. But the gift-shop expensive.

You get the impression that someone slightly odd has seized control of the art gallery in Newlyn. You might expect that you are going to see some art from the local school with one or two well-known artists being represented but that isn't the case. Instead, there's a lot of very amateurish work and quite a lot of stuff by children. There's no sense of what it's all about except as a place for Art classes for the children of arty parents. It seems to have a hangup about curation and is so anxious about its rights to select and show you anything that it ends up showing you almost nothing. It's disappointing.

Paid to visit and very disappointed to find very little to see. The one room depicting sea debris with painting was very good but not worth the entry fee. The same applies to it's sister gallery The Exchange. Lovely modern aspects but disinterested counter staff and disappointing as nothing to see bar a few pictures on the one wall. The cafe was also closed and the facilities need a good clean and revamp.

Wow. This is what getting mugged feels like.
The £7 entry must be based on a pound for every minute it takes to look around the place. I'm also unsure if a room smaller your average wardrobe constitutes a gallery.
Do yourself a favour and walk past the entrance down to the seafront. The views from there are free and are far more beneficial to your sense of being.

I hate to do this but they really need to look at what they are doing and have a re-think. We paid £14 to view the exhibition, the marketing outside had beautiful artwork on it so we were optimistic.
The first piece was a video which should have came with a warning. It was very ‘flashy’ as a migraine sufferer I could not stay for fear of it setting off an attack.
Then we went to a tiny room with art. Not my thing. That’s all I will say.
The main room is not huge. The exhibits are not labelled very well and it really wasn’t great. We were in and out in ten minutes and felt ripped off.
From the reviews the majority of people leave feeling ripped off and disappointed. We actually went off looking for more art as we couldn’t believe that was it! But it just led us to a garden and a cafe.

We are contemporary in nature and support upcoming artists, and outreach programmes with guest curators, often from minority groups. With two venues we can offer a wide and varied programme, showcasing national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region.
Because rising costs and huge overheads, without an admission charge we wouldn’t be able to open the gallery, to support upcoming / emerging artists, or have the hugely broad range of exhibitions that we offer. The current exhibition is in partnership with Focal Point Gallery, in Southend-on-Sea, it's an artist response to issues around climate change for coastal towns and communities.
The gallery admission fee is for two galleries (Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange) with a two-hour visiting time to see both galleries. The admission cost is for one year, for both galleries.

With a broad interest in culture one should visit the gallery dedicated, by its title, to The Newlyn School of Art especially on a wet day in March. Having keenly paid £7 each and understanding that the current exhibition showcases climate change we were excited. The display in the rather small gallery room was rubbish. Nothing more than an attempt to illustrate what everyone already knows and with more connection to politics than to art. Of course, the café was closed. Searching for a positive one finds the architecture of the compact building is pleasing.

I believe that if you pay £9 to enter an art gallery the art on display should have some artistic merit. If the art at Newlyn gallery had been submitted by 3 year olds you may have been impressed. However when you find that this drivel is actually completed by adults it makes you question it's validity. I speak as an artist myself (musician). If you tried to get away with this substandard nonsense in a musical setting your lack of talent would very soon become evident to all. Unfortunately the art world seems to be full of charlatans who claim to be "artists" yet have little or no talent and have obviously not invested much time in their craft. We went round twice; convinced we must have missed something. We were there 10 minutes in total 4 of which were taken up by a man taking our details regarding gift aid. Charlatans!

This was an expensive visit for a very poorly curated exhibition. Frankly, maximum time is 15 mins not 1 - 2 hours as suggested on the website. it felt as though a minimum amount of effort had been made and was a deeply disappointing experience.

Basically the 2 of us have paid £8 each to use the gallery toilets. Taking pride of place in the downstairs room was a cordless power drill surrounded by unhung pictures. The main display, however colourful, did not keep us embiggened for any length of time.

Can you take dogs into the cafe?

I certainly took mine into the gallery but didn’t use the cafe. The staff were really helpful and dog friendly so I think it would be OK.
