Tattershall Castle proudly rises from the flat Lincolnshire fens; a survivor of conflict, decay and restoration. Built of red brick in an era of stone, this fortified manor is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of English medieval brickwork. A past home to Lords, ladies, soldiers and cows, the castle was built by the Treasurer of England, Lord Ralph Cromwell in the 1440s and saved for the nation by Lord Curzon of Kedleston in 1911. Take the winding staircase, wander through vast echoing chambers and walk out onto the battlements revealing the beauty of the Lincolnshire countryside.

Eating and Shopping: Guardhouse shop selling hot and cold drinks, wrapped cakes, sandwiches, crisps, ice-cream, gifts and souvenirs. Picnics welcome.

Making the most of your day: Free audio guides for children and adults. Events throughout the year, including Easter Egg fun, medieval re-enactments, open-air theatre and Christmas market.

Accessibility: Site contains loose gravel paths (difficult for manual wheelchairs) and uneven grassy surfaces. Wheelchair access to the ground floor only. Access to the rest of the castle via a spiral staircase (149 steps) and steps to the basement.

Dogs: Welcome on leads in the grounds only.

Visited whilst in Lincolnshire. An interesting castle with lots of stained glassed Windows Lots of winding stairs to go up but well worth it when you get to the top. The view was fabulous

My wife and I was travelling around Lincolnshire on Sunday 23rd and having visited Gunby Hall (Free NT members 20 mile 40 mins) we stopped at Tattershall Castle (again NT free members) and found it interesting and well worth the visit. Walking back to the car park we walked into the lovely Collegiate Church and had their tea and cake... More

We visited Tattershall Castle using our national trust cards. It was well worth the visit, there were activities for the kids and we lived exploring the castle and it's grounds.

Although the rooms are not furnished, there are posters on the walls depicting what each room was used for so you can imagine what it was like all those years ago. You can also listen to an audio tour which you can borrow from the reception/shop area. The climb to the top is well worth it, the views from each... More

If you enjoy National Trust stately homes with rooms full of period furniture and walls festooned with old paintings, then Tattershall Castle may not be for you. This NT property has no furniture other than one or two plain wooden chests, and the only images on the walls are a few information boards bearing material that is inadequate and not... More

More to do here because it was bank holiday weekend so old fashioned games, a sword fo rthe kids to hold etc We weren't offered the audio tour and only found out there was one later on. Friendly staff and surprisingly reasonable entry fees for National Trust. Bit annoying the egg hunt took the kids into small rooms so it... More

Took a friend to see this castle - as a brick built castle that was a family home - it is rather unusual - although it is basically an empty shell. You need to be fit to climb the spiral staicase - but the infomation available plus the views of Lincolnshire make it well worth it I noted from the... More
