This is one of the earliest churches in the Venetain lagoon. The island of Torcello is peaceful with the wonderful Cipriana restaurant to have lunch in. The church is fascinating and well worth a visit. Torcello is 20 mis- 1/2 hour water taxi ride from Venice. Well worth it on a nice day. We were there May 2016 and it... More

I would recommend this as it gives fantastic views across the lagoon back towards Venice. To visit take the water bus from F.te Nove to Burano (line 12, March 2017) (40 mins) and then the dedicated water bus to Torcello. This is well signed at the dock and runs a frequent service. You then have a pleasant walk across Torcello... More

We love Torcello as it is never crowded with the hoards of tourist who daily visit Venice. Located in the piazza, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting churches in the lagoon. It was founded in the 7th century (what you see today is mostly an 11th century reconstruction), a somewhat scary... More

The Basilica predates Venice and is absolutely amazing. There is a good audiguide. In particular there is a huge wall mosaic, other mosaics and features. In comparison to other Basilicas it is very simple and peaceful. Nearby there is a campomile that you can go up for the view.

Wonderful religious mosaics, reminiscent of Costantinople. Well worth the 5 Euro price of admission.

I visited solely to see the mosaic of the Last Judgment and i did not go up the Tower. The mosaic is well worth the time to see it and if you are lucky enough to do so alone without a crowd (or herd) of other tourists you will be most fortunate indeed. Spend just 10 or 15 mins sitting... More

This was our reason to head to Torcello. One of the oldest churches consecrated in 1008. Beautiful mosaic work of the Last Judgment and much more. It's worth the trip across the lagoon and gives you a nice break from Venice.

I've been here a lot of times and each time I think I see more. Look carefully at the mosaic at the west end as well as the one that everyone knows at the east. If you're fit enough, climb the campanile for the fantastic view (no lift, so it's a long way up ...)

They have done a great deal of work in recent years to restore this beautiful, modest and impressive cathedral. Its intricate cobbled and tiled floors and its superb mosaics are tranquil and ancient - the golden mosaics probably pre-date the arrival of William the Conqueror in Britain. It is not always easy to get to but you will leave with... More

Fully recommend to go there! You should have time enough to explore not only this extraordinary place with memorable mosaics, but also neighbouring museum and chapel.
