Southern France has marvelous sights, hikes, history, and places to stay. This is one of them. Villeneuvette is an hour’s bus ride from Montpellier and 300 years away from its bustle. There are canyons, forests and vineyards within short drives and staying with Anna at her comfortable home will be a secure base for you. There are two flights of steps up to the renovated dwelling, but once there you will feel very much at home.

This is the site of the former Royal Cloth Factory - La Manufacture Royale - and its workers' residences - which are now mostly residences and some shops, specializing particularly in art. The factory buildings themselves appear to be in the process of transformation into lodging - but hopefully with the façades intact - it would be a shame to change the historic ambiance of the town. What is really impressive is the almost perfect condition of most of the buildings and the cobblestone streets, as well as the ancient plane trees that line the entry and continue within the town walls. Great place to walk through, but this is also a place where people live, so it is not really a place where you can peek inside, but exterior views are quite sufficient, and there is a nice walk around the town, which is not very large at all. For anyone with even a slight interest in visiting a well-preserved industrial town circa 1670 that continued into the 1950s without great damage to its unique appearance, this is your place. And these were not Dickensian manufacturing conditions, by any means, as your walk around the town will confirm.

We are from the region, had heard about it, but we came across it by chance. A visit on a very pleasant summer morning, a beautiful light bathed this village which has a historic past.
As a result, the only thing I regretted was that there were no explanatory plaques affixed to the facades of the different buildings and the functions they housed. We have to consult Wikipedia to feel the historical atmosphere that reigns in this place.

Very disappointed by our visit.
Unfortunately, it is only a field of ruins, what a pity considering the historical interest of this manufacture, a jewel of French industrial heritage left totally abandoned.
