You need to experience and explore the lake and it's surroundings. Locals are very nice and will assist you if you need recommendations. There are lots of places to see or do. Make sure you take bug repelan and sun screen. Depending on where you go bring with you a bathing suit, towel and sandals. Lastly, don't forget your camera!!

We loved the lake, but the tours were a ripoff. The offer is to visit multiple sites, but several have additional hidden costs involved. Pfft.

Be sure to come around and get the view from the south side so you can get the full glory of mini-volcanoes left over from the last big eruption. It is worth the time to read the geologic history of the region. Fascinating!

Our boat only took two of us as it was the day after the semana santa holidays and town was quiet. He stopped at a local pier so we could purchase beer. Fun stops along the lake to see the monkeys, preserve and they also make hand make tortillas with stuffings for lunch!!

A great little city the lake is large and beautiful. We reserved a private boat tour and went around the whole lake. The sights and wildlife is exceptional.

We took.the boat cruise of the areas around the lake with another couple. There are many boats available. Each stop around the lake is an additional fee so we only stopped at the witch doctor island. We also opted for the volcanic dust facial which is donation only. After it dries you stop at another stop to wash it off... More

Our covered boat picked us up at the hotel and the pilot was very knowledgeable about the lake's details as well as pointing out different birds and monkeys. The monkeys live on two different islands. The pilot had brought bananas to lure them right down to the water and spent much time positioning the boat so all could see.

The lake is beautiful and we very much enjoyed the 2 hour cruise arranged for us by our hotel, with one exception. The Monkey islands. Two of the islands on the lake have resident monkeys. Two species are represented, neither of which is native to the area and only one of those is even native to Mexico. Despite signs that... More

You can explore the lake by boat that leave from Catemaco. They drive you around the norther shore of the lake and make stops at little villages where you can get a clay-massage etc. for extra-cost. Nice for 2-3 hours. But there are definitely more stunning lakes to be found in Mexico and elsewhere in the world.
