- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,777 contributionsFabulous underground adventure!Lod Cave is a bit of a drive from Pai (only 50 kilometers, but at least one hour because of the many curves), but is well worth the trip! They present the cave as three separate caves (Big Column, Doll, and Coffin), but in reality, they are all just sections of the same cave. Visitors pay 600 baht for a group (up to three people) to have a guide with a lantern and visit to all three sections of the cave, including a wonderful bamboo raft ride inside the cave. The local community benefits significantly by providing guides and raft operators in the cave, which is a nice positive aspect; there is a sharing of the revenue among the guides, rafts operators and administration. We were quite disappointed, however, in the guide assigned to us as she seemed totally uninterested in our questions, failed to spend any time in highlighting attractions with her flashlight, refused to speak English (even though she clearly knew some English), and generally seemed eager to just get the tour over with and get rid of us. Despite this, we found the cave itself to be beautiful and impressive. The most enjoyable part was riding the rafts through the large chambers with bats squeaking above us in the dark and then approaching the large cave opening. The ancient coffin was also interesting (although in poor condition), as these pre-historic coffins are found in various places throughout Southeast Asia. We very much enjoyed the visit to the cave and highly recommend it, especially to nature lovers. We only wished they would improve the standards and performance of their guides.Visited February 2023Written 11 February 2023
- UncutNeusaess, Germany12 contributionsWell worth the drive to a beautiful cave.It is quite a distance from Pai towards the cave, but the drive is adventurous and quite a lot of fun with your own bike. There are also some view points on your way to the cave and you are most likely to drive around 1 hour. There is also an entrance fee (August 2023: 1 cave = 300 Baht, 2 caves = 500 and 3 caves = 600 for a group of three people). Unfortunately, we arrived during a time only cave #1 had opened. However, that cave was huge with a lot of bats and was a unique experience for those, who have not been in a cave just yet. Yes, it kind of smelled and a lot of poo from the bats laid on the ground / way. That’s nature, though. Guides are friendly and wait for you in-case you want to make some pictures. It has been a fun day for us and I would recommend driving to the cafes few miles further at “Ban Jabo”, I guess - for a nice view and soup / coffee.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 August 2023

This would cost B600 as of writing this review. Cave 1 is known as Column Cave, Cave 2 is Doll Cave and Cave 3 is Coffin Cave. The guide would point out the various shapes of the stalactites and stalagmites as we trekked inside the caves. Cave 3 is a steep upclimb to see a pre historic coffin. Thereafter, we board a bamboo raft to sail down the caves. We saw big fishes and bats along the way. Our guide suggested we hiked back to the visitors centre. It was a easy walk of 15 minutes.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023

It was really cool. Came by motorbike from Pai - fun ride. Breathtaking views, would not have experienced those without coming here. It's definitely worth it for that alone.
Caving
Pros: Really exciting, crazy wildlife and interesting cave.
Cons (for some): the smell, vampire animals + if you don't like heights/the dark, this is not for you.
Made for a really fun day out. Loved how close it was to the border too. Really well kept resort area too.

This cave is one of the easiest (though not wheel chair friendly) to walk through, a short walk from the car park through the forest, pay for a guide (not too cheap) and you can enter the cave. The cave mouth and the whole cave are FULL of BATS!! Unlike some cave where people claim to have bats and you can barely see any, this place are crawling with bats, on the ceiling, on the floor, some birds are stuck on the floor with GUANO (bat dropping)
A short walk around the cave, a small boat ride with hundreds of fish swimming around you, don't worry about capsizing, I think it is quite shallow, just full of GUANO in the dirty water.
There are some tough climb for people who wants to climb up and see the "coffin", though I think it is way too small for human.
Overall, it's a fun experience compared to ALL the cave I visited.
Tips : Bring a hat to prevent bat dropping on your head, bring a strong torch light to see the top of the cave.

Cave is amazingly big and mysterious on its shapes and calcium formations. It feels like you are in another planet. Bamboo rafting with literally thousands of fish around you, inside a cave, was a totally unexpected part of the cave trip.

We visited using a one-day pass for numerous attractions in the Pia district. The pass was 200 THB per adult and then some attractions charged extra for a guide and parking. We paid 210 THB for two adults to enter the cave with a guide on a bamboo raft, this included parking for a car (I think it was 50 THB for the car). You can purchase the pass at any of the attractions and do them in any order within one day.

Lod Cave (or Tham Lod) is a cave between Mae Hon Song City and Pai City. Its about halfway between the two and around 1-2 hours motorcycle from either direction. I think you can easily book day trips here with the tour organizers in Pai, but going on your own is also easily done.
There are three caves here, with a tiered prices depending on how many you want to do. I would recommend doing all three since you're in the area and the third cave is the coolest (you get to take a raft!). I think its 500THB for foreigners per group of 3. We had 4 people, so its 1000THB for two groups. Since it was low season (in April), we didn't see any other tourists to tag along with at the entrance.
If you like feeding fish, the entrance counter sells bags of fish food that you can scatter into the water at either the entrance or on the raft to the third cave. I bought two (though I cannot remember the price, I don't think it was much more than 50THB a bag).
The first two caves are nice, with stone and cave formations resembling various animals and other things (like a boob, for reals, the guides will take pains to point it out while giggling). The third cave involves boarding a bamboo raft that is poled down a river by a boatman. the river has catfish and other species that you can feed as you float along.
The cave has some prehistoric painting and coffins from 20,000 years ago that might interest the history buff too.
As all caves are, its somehow cooler, yet incredibly humid, so you sweat more inside. I would also STRONGLY RECOMMEND bringing and wearing a hat inside the cave. (Hear me out guys.)
The cave has thousands of swallows and bats roosting in the natural rafters and the floor is literally covered in guano and droppings. I don't envy combing poo out of my hair, so do as the guides do and wear a hat. It saved one of my family members' hairline and reputation by deflecting an accurately aimed ball of poo from the crown of his head. Thank God.

The caves are about 1.25 hours away from Pai a bit of a stretch on a motorcycle in my humble opinion. In typical Thai fashion foreigners pay 500 baht whereas Thai get away with 300 baths. The money pays for a guide and a raft tour. Each guide only gets one ride per day - how much out of the fee that goes to her, I don’t know. I tipped 100 baht. The caves as such are very nice. The raft tour incredible. This place is worth a visit.

Spend half a day visiting this beautiful cave. A marvel that the Thai government has preserved for future generations. Words cannot really describe the experience. You’ll thank yourself for spending time here.

The Prempracha buses go many times a day. I think 150 bt one way. If you want to go to the caves and return the same day, many tour companies offer this.

Hello,
We are hoping to ride there on scooters ourselves. Just wanted to check if the road is very steep or if it is suitable to ride there?
Thanks

It is suitable to ride there, yes. The road is wide and in good condition. You do go up and down a big mountain on the way so there are bends, but they were fine. Enjoy!

Hi Lisa,
I found the village page from one of my friends. Search on FB with keyword "thamlodvillage". You'll see the black and white cave logo. It's the page created by villagers under government fund.

We are a family of four, 3 adults and one kid (under 12). What's the costs for this trip with guide? Do we need to take the raft? And what's the costs for this too?
Will this excursion require a lot of walking?
Thanks!

If you have your own transport then you can easily drive there and hire a guide for 150 Baht for up to 3 people (not per person). Depending on exactly how old your child is you may need 2 guides or they may allow just one. Bamboo rafts are extra and you can either pay to go one way and walk back or have a return journey. I think it's about 300 Baht per person for a return.
To get to the cave entrance from the car park you'll need to walk through the gardens and a bit of forest on good paths for about half a mile at most. It's about a 20 minute walk from the exit of the cave back to the car park if you took a bamboo raft one way.
You can organise a tour from Pai for about 400 baht per person, there is public transport you can use but it involves motorbike taxis to get to the cave so it's a good adventure but won't really save you a lot of money.
There is a shop and restaurant on site to pick up refreshments or Cave Lodge is nearby and they do really good Farang (Foreigner) or Thai food.
Hope this helps.
