Truely glad we stopped!

Didn't expect to learn so much and be able to see and touch old fossils here. The kids had a a blast and were also able to take a old fossil home with them Both the caboose and train station are part of this museum and there is also a lot of local history to learn about too!

Excellent museum on mining and I would have given it five stars except for the visit down to the actual mine. Before I went, I knew the ceiling might be short in places, but the mine excursion is almost 30 minutes of trying to walk bent over to avoid whacking your head on the five foot something ceiling. Yes, you... More

Check what days and times they are doing the fossil hunting tour and sign up! Dr. Critchley is a great guide. He's very patient, explains things well and has great stories (ask him about Alex Storm). It's a great way to spend a couple of hours - and you get to keep a few fossils as souvenirs. The museum can... More

They gave me a fossil!! This place is hard to find as it is at the back of a large parking lot obscured by a train caboose and old style train station. Both the caboose and train station are part of this museum. The building at the back is where the fossils are and where you pay the very reasonable... More

This was pretty challenging to find with the GPS and a few small signs to follow... The result though was amazing... The tour guide Addie -- was dynamic, knowledgeable and quite fascinating. She kept our kids engaged with a variety of hands on activities. The leader of the facility was willing to spend time with us and the kids to... More

The building is the Town of Sydney Mines', former train station, and it is in a great location, with lots of parking.

OK, everyone needs to turn off at Sydney Mines and go to this museum. All the other stuff you will see and hear on Cape Breton Island owes its existence to these prehistoric plants, some of which topped 150 feet. What do I mean? The culture, the art, the music, none of it would exist in the way it does... More
