Among the craft villages creating traditional art wood carvings, those from San Martin Tilcajete in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico are the very finest. These works of art are mythical creatures with origins traceable to ancient Mexican religious beliefs that fuse contradictory forces represented by a variety of animal and human features.

This is a wonderful side trip if you are in Oaxaca area. We drove from Oaxaca centre and with the Navman in our rental car it was reasonably straight forward to find the town of San Martin Tilcajete. We got a bit lost finding the workshop so stopped and asked some locals. The English explanation and tour of the workshop... More

You will be spending around an hour just learning how the alebrijes get made. You will be amazed of what goes into the process and amazed of the pieces. Normal alebrijes that you see elsewhere just won't cut it anymore. The family that started the shop is normally there and you will see how detailed the job is. Some pieces... More

This workshop, where beautiful pieces of art are made, is an absolute must stop. You are shown how alebrijes are created. The entire process from the carving of the wood, the painting and the creating of the dyes. BEAUTIFUL!

By far, the most talented group of Artesanos, patiently crafting the mist outstanding painted wood sculptures. A must see for anyone, and a true hidden treasure of mexican culture.

During my travels in Mexico, I saw numerous alebrijes in many places but the majority of them though lovely - were not art for me (I would categorize them as handicraft/craft)! I am an artist and love the style of intricate forms and detail. I saw alebrijes in some museums and they were phenomenal, artistic, and very detailed and I... More

We took a cab from Oaxaca (first can we hailed agreed to 600 pesos for 4 hours) and this was our first stop. This is clearly the most popular place in town for a reason. They produce very fine quality pieces that are almost unmatched. We took a quick tour but our Spanish is bad so we only caught about... More

Had the pleasure to visit the amazing workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles last Oct during Day of the Dead. A delightful experience and an unforgettable time. See the premier carvers and painters of Oaxaca in action. You can even take classes with them focussed on different areas -wood carving, painting and more. Seeing how they mix the all natural... I visited here with my spanish professor and took a short tour in Spanish. The tour covered the key elements of the workshop from preparing the copal (the tree from which the wood is taken), carving the wood, curing the wood, and the painting of the alebrijes. Seeing this all happening in real time definitely gives you a real sense... More

It takes you at least 30 min to get there from Oaxaca on a road that has plenty of "topes" (bumps). Be aware that taxi and even private vehicles are reckless on their driving. Getting to the shop can be a bit tricky but is worth it. The staff is super friendly and there is a tour of the workshop... More
