It is different every time we drive by. It has been years since we have looked at it more closely.

I think it is an amazing spot and it is neat to see how it changes from time to time. We have been told that it is to be developed, but we have travelled past for at least 50 years, and still nothing much has...More

Been by many times, usually later in the year, and have seen the salts developing on the lake. Sadly, though, looked clear, like a typical lake this time through. Maybe those traveling later in the year will have better luck.

Going to have to try this spot again sometime. With all the wet weather we've had this year there's a lot of water in the lake and no visible spots. There's signs up saying that there's plans on developing the area into more of a...More

Unfortunately when we went to this lake we really couldn't see any spots and were disappointed. Later in the day we were told that due to heavy rains earlier in the year the spots were not visible. Check before you go!

This is a mainstay of any drive to Osoyoos on Hwy 3. USUALLY looks pretty cool. Right now though, we have had so much water that you can’t actually see the spots.... hopefully in the fall the water will recede and you’ll be able to...More

It's interesting to see, but you can't get very close to it. There is a gate at the entrance to the Lake.

Spotted Lake in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley apparently loses it's spots. We visited in an unseasonably cool and rainy June and it's surface was unblemished.

The lake is surrounded by a wooden fence, but there is a pulloff with a few and an information board. Unfortunately, in mid-June 2018, it was just a small marshy lake--no spots. Presumably, viewing in August or September is better.

this is cool to see....but at the moment because of all the runoff from flooding, the spots are gone for the moment. I would think as Summer continues they the spots will be back.

The area is fenced off at some distance away from the lake. Best activity would be photography with a long lens!

Hello, I'm a San Francisco, California-based photographer who would like to visit Spotted Lake near Osoyoos during the week of August 15 OR the week of August 22. I know the color and dryness of the lake bed are subject to the whims of nature. But I'd like to purchase my ticket very soon to take advantage of the cheap fares, and would very much appreciate your thoughts about which week is better. What are the water levels like now? Ideally, I'd like the rings to be distinct with some color, and maybe a bit of water in order to pick up and sky and cloud reflections. Well aware it's a crap shoot, but given the distance I'm traveling, I'd like to make as informed a guess as possible. Lastly, can you refer me to a local naturalist or organization that has a strong interest in and knowledge of the phenomena, whom I might follow up with for advice? Thank you very much, Ken

Most of the water in the lake evaporates over the summer, revealing colorful mineral deposits. Large “spots” on the lake appear and are colored according to the mineral composition and seasonal amount of precipitation.Most... More
