This park is beautiful. Tons of hiking and wildlife. A lot of great places for family outings and picnics with waterfalls.

Highway 1 was closed due to a mudslide (or so we heard) and so we had to take a detour through Radium Hot Springs on our drive from Kelowna to Calgary. Instead of making the relatively short drive from Golden to Lake Louise on Highway 1, we had to detour south on Highway 95 to Radium Hot Springs and then take Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park to rejoin Highway 1 between Lake Louise and Banff.
The beauty of this drive, especially the southern part just north of Radium Hot Springs was almost (yes almost) worth the extra 1.5 hours added to our trip by distance, lesser roads and very heavy traffic.

Whilst Banff and Jasper get all the press, Kootenay is equally magnificent, but without the crowds. The hikes are magnificent, and the lack of crowds are a dream.....

We stayed at McLeod Meadows campground for 3 nights and will not be coming back but will look at Red Streak campground instead.

For being a campground in a national park McLeod Meadows is a disappointment. You arrive and everything is rundown. Nothing is cared for here. Picnic tables are worn out, bathrooms are subpar and most other buildings look dilapidated or have graffiti on them. This campground should be invested in more but instead it’s forgotten and left to rot away. Pretty disappointing.

McLeod Meadows does have a beautiful river running by it with a nice mountain backdrop and that’s about it.

Stop at Numa Falls to stretch your legs and enjoy a lovely waterfall.

If you are travelling north from Radium the vista of Castle Mountain is unforgettable as you near the divide.

This is a fantastic ark and so much quieter than yoho. The transcanads highway runs through it and so there is a bit of road noise but goes soon as you walk. Visited 4 areas all with excellent trails and a good variety of mountain views and water.

Beautiful and in my opinion, very underrated national park!! Some trials were still closed so we did not get to do everything I wanted (just means I have to return I guess - shucks!) we hiked Dog lake and Simpson River. Did not get a chance to do the paint pots or Juniper which I had on my list. Such a nice park to hike and drive through and then to be abel to stop at the hot springs after a day of hiking is really just the icing on the perfection cake

We drove from Radium to Highway 1 without stopping, and, as always, were blown away by the scenery. The drive feels different, with rock walls enclosing the highway for some distance. Very different from the other mountain park roads. The view of Castle Mountain at the end was spectaculay.
We must go back and explore some of the trails some day.

Due to the forest fires we ended up having to take a different route home from Calgary for the first time. We fell in love with the drive through Kootenay National Park and actually would prefer to take this longer route moving forward. We were surprised there was not a lot of traffic on this route. We did have to drive a little slower but it was worth it. There were lots of rest stops. All but one were well maintained.

There are so many places to pull over and take pictures, we saw so much wildlife on the side of the road and some stunning lakes. We saw so much wildlife we could have played wildlife BINGO. Card will be made for next time we do this drive!

Not sure if the Sinclair Canyon on your way in/out of Radium Hot Springs is part of the Kootenay National Park but it is very close and is worth a stop to walk out. Check out the view point on the one side, see the rushing river/waterfall and see the narrow canyon We saw some eagles there as well!

What an awesome day!

With so many things to see and do on this route, it also offers just a peaceful slow drive through. Generally traffic is rather low in the park and nobody ever seems to be in a hurry. Far less hustle then the other national parks in the area and guaranteed to see some goats or sheep along the way.
