Between the 1st and 4th century, Sanxay was an important centre for cures and pilgrimages placed under the protection of two divinities. Set in the verdant valley of the Vonne, the remains of the largest buildings (temples, amphitheatre, thermal baths) located throughout a 19-hectare site make the site one of the best preserved and most interesting of the monuments belonging to Gallo-Roman times. Unexpected large and interesting site

I wasn't expecting a site of such extent - apparently covering 15 hectares and largely unknown. It was really interesting to look around and try to envisage it in its prime. The site staff were very pleasant and helpful but the site could benefit hugely from some updating of information and cross-referencing to the info booklet lent to visitors. It... More

Cutting cross country for Angouleme to Parthanay,we kept seeing signs for this site and our route took us unexpectedly to the site Gallo-Romaine. We couldn't resist stopping and spent nearly 2 hours here. It was truly superb and the lady most helpful. The site was closed for work but still accessible to the public and as there was no guide... Wonderful venue for open air staging of great operas. Great acoustics and views from every angle. Only be prepared to walk through uneven fields from the car parks a sloping distance away from the stage site.

Lovely little place. In true French style, nobody else around, 5 euros 50 to enter (children free). We brought cakes and drinks, and had a leisurely wander around. The baths and theatre were very interesting, the Temple was a little harder to visualise for the children. A few books and trinkets sold in the ticket office. Perfect place for spending... More

We visited here with a very young child still in a buggy yet we still managed to get around. Wonderful site to visit, even if just to have a wander around the grounds. The baths were amazing.

The Roman baths are very special. We also attended the opera there this year and the ambiance was very special although the cost was rather hefty for the area at the top of the Roman theatre.

We have often driven past this site on our way to friends but finally decided to pay a visit during a recent trip. The site is spread across 3 different areas and each one shows much detail of how they looked in their hey-day, especially the baths which are stunning archaeological examples of Roman engineering! Enjoy the experience and visit... More

This is a site of three Gallo-Roman structures for exploring at your leisure with a guide leaflet. Every summer there is an open-air, night time opera with an excellent professional orchestra and singers. It is a magical experience !

This is a surprising large site with some substantial ruins, which visitors can just wander around and marvel at How something this size came about in this relatively remote site.
