I have visited Belmont Abbey School, Hereford on many occasions. As an old boy, I look at the headstones in the churchyards, reminise & say a short prayer for the repose of the souls of the monks that I knew during my time at Belmont in the late 1950`s. However, my efforts are made increasingly difficult because many of the inscriptions on the headstones have been eroded away. Could not the authorities at Belmont request that the engravers renew some of the eroded inscriptions? after all, the abbey must be a good customer & so be in a strong negotiating position to have this work undertaken.
Perhaps, as an interim measure, a plan of the graves with the names of those who lay at rest ther in could be made available in the abbey porch to interested parties.

A Tranquil Place To Be
Jul 2019
The grounds were a delight, the rooms spacious and the staff very helpful, and the fact that it was in a rural setting and yet Hereford was not far away added to the charm.

Peaceful

I drove to the Abbey on a sunny afternoon in April to pay my respects to a deceased friend, on what would've been his forthcoming birthday.
The grounds staff were out strimming the grass between the head stones. The surrounding countryside on the outskirts of the City of Hereford was splendid and peaceful. The Abbey looked majestic in the sun.

Grand Benedictine Abbey...

Located a few miles South-West of Hereford, easy to find and free parking spaces available, this visit was on Saturday morning before heading into Hereford.
Firstly I went into Hedley Lodge to obtain the fascinating Belmont Abbey guidebook(well worth the £4.50), where there is tea/coffee and simple snacks available.
Beautiful architecture, this Abbey has origins from 1854, Thomas Joseph Brown, a benedictine monk, was appointed its first bishop.
This Priory/Abbey is fully intact and as you walk around inside, the light is ever changing through such beautiful glass stained windows and it was mesmerising.
Such great photo opportunity, wonderful architecture, the lady chapel, St.Benedict's chapel, St.Joseph's chapel, carved stone angels, this was an amazing visit.
Beautiful location surrounded by the Herefordshire countryside.

A relatively modern (mid 19th century) traditional Abbey church
Mar 2018 • Couples
From the outside and inside, this looks like a large medieval church. However, it was built around 1860-70 and is now the Abbey Church for the monastery, as well as the local parish church.

Some good stained glass windows in a peaceful environment, slightly offset by the attached hotel and the NHS hospital built in the Abbey grounds.

A hidden gem
Aug 2017 • Friends
A working abbey set in beautiful countryside. The abbey is home to a group of Benedictine monks; Mass and the Offices are celebrated in the Abbey church throughout the day. There is an electronic guide to the history of the abbey and a discreet video showing the life of the abbey. A small gift shop is open between 2pm - 5pm
