Description:

The museum collection on display reveals an island community changing over...

The museum collection on display reveals an island community changing over the years to both external and internal pressures. Alderney has a fascinating history starting with extensive Stone, Bronze and Iron Age activity, with evidence of historically important Roman activity at Longy. The Victorian era brought huge change to Alderney and the landscape is still dominated by Queen Victoria's interest in the island as a defence harbour from the French. Most recently the Second World War had an extreme effect on Alderney when all but a few of the island's inhabitants were evacuated and the island occupied by German forces for the duration of the war.

The museum is well laid out, informative and interesting. The separate rooms on ships and shipwrecks, and wildlife are really fascinating, I loved the interactive bird song buttons. The areas covering the historic years of the first and second world wars, are enlightening, and really moving. I certainly learnt alot here. The volunteers that run the museum were really friendly... It was raining so we spent a hour in the Alderney Museum which we enjoyed a great deal. The people were very friendly and knew lots about the history of the island.

So interesting, all of it. £3.00 entrance fee. To see the trauma people of Alderney went through during the Second World War was incredible, especially when they returned after the war to see their dwellings ruined.

It is hard to write about this small museum with a large story to tell. I just cannot say more without spoiling the surprise.
