Overview
More
The Exchange is a major contemporary art space in the centre of Penzance that opened in 2007 in conjunction with renovations to Newlyn Art Gallery. Together the galleries present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education. Formerly the town’s telephone exchange, the huge space retains the original industrial feel of the building and features a large t-shaped gallery and a striking glass facade that runs the entire length of the building. It is well suited to installation and social participation projects and its international reputation allows it to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall. The Exchange is located off historic Chapel Street, within easy walking distance of the bus and train stations. There is a well-stocked book and gift shop plus a cafe serving snacks and light lunches. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

We visited this after just coming from the sister Newlyn gallery. This was equally disappointing but more so as car parking is rather difficult. The current exhibition is uninspiring, although admittedly thought provoking - as good art should be - and there is a lot...More

Wandering around Penzance after a visit to St. Michael's Mount we were seeking somewhere for lunch and came across the Exchange Gallery with a sign advertising "healthy lunches". We decided to give it a go and were delighted we did. The young lady serving was...More

This gallery is just off Chapel Street with one large exhibit hall and a small café in an interesting building. The modern art on display when we were there ranged from intriguing to dreadful (a bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling lit by three...More

A really fine gallery we were lucky to tag onto a tour given by the curator who helped explain some of the exhibits this really enhanced our visit.

.. Dreadful but sure some people who claim to understand modern art will pay (only £2 each). Linked into Newlyn gallery which is similarly as bad. Traditionalists should go to Penlee

The current exhibition, A Certain Kind of Light was really interesting, a good mix of installions and artwork. The cafe was lovely, the lunch was really nice. Overall it was really good value for money and a nice place to spend time

Sorry, but it's not for us. It's too contemporary, too modern for us. It was straight in and straight out again.

When i went there, there was an amazing exhibition on the use of light over 6 decades. It's a small space but well organized. I was really surprise by the level of the exhibition in such a small town. I loved it!!!

Went to this small but fascinating exhibition at the a Exchange which is a contemporary gallery in Penzance. There was a small range of pieces but all were thought-provoking. I loved the Anish Kapoor piece but was interested in the 'fairy lights' made with household...More

Unpleasant exterior, especially if arrive via Market Jew St, but very welcoming once you get through the door. Good display area. Visiting/special exhibitions vary from dire to excellent. Good cafe with sea glimpses. Unisex loos; means women don't have to queue
