- jrapeterBude, United Kingdom920 contributionsA very attractive NT gardenThis is a relatively small National Trust garden. The house is not open to the public. That having been said the gardens are semi-tropical and still partially flowering in October. They must be extremely pretty and colourful in spring. We enjoyed the walk and the surroundings. It was very relaxing, peaceful and tranquil on the Sunday afternoon that we visited. The terrace at the furthest point of the gardens affords an amazing view down to Newlyn and across the bay to the Mullion side. You only need about an hour or so here to include the walk, the walled garden and a quick coffee in the café. It was a very good time-filler for us after 3 hours on the coast path and before getting ready for an evening meal.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- cngjLooe, United Kingdom795 contributionsLots of magnolias in MarchWe visited here with our young children back in March last year. We were lucky that there were lots of magnolias and camelias in flower. We also enjoyed the tree ferns and the plants in the walled garden. We stayed for most of the day and had lovely cakes in the cafe. We'll be back to see it at a different time of year.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 February 2024
- CatSt Ives, United Kingdom701 contributionsBrilliant place to spend a day relaxing in the peaceful gardens. It is still one of my favourite places to explore, I always manage to find a little pocket of the Garden I've not explored before. Absolutely divine lunch in the cafe on site, too. Secondhand book shop. A few different toilet blocks. Visited with my parents plenty of seating dotted around.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- HannahBristol, United Kingdom34 contributionsA really great NT siteEasily my favourite NT place so far. I visited on a very hot March day and found it to be fairly quiet and incredibly peaceful, it was amazing to see so many beautiful plants and explore the different paths. The lady in the shop who scanned my card kindly gave me a map and talked me through each section of the gardens, she was very helpful! I will definitely be returning at different times of the year to see what else is in bloom!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 March 2024

- Diane RHelston, United Kingdom154 contributionsStunning gardensTrengwainton is a beautiful, peaceful tropical delight with views down to the bay. It was very quiet when we visited which made it all the more romantic. Lots of beautiful colourful specimens to inspire you - lost count of the tree ferns - we really loved it. Of all the Cornish gardens you can visit, this is probably our second favourite after Trebah - absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a trip.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- MonsieurslinkyNorthamptonshire, United Kingdom249 contributionsThe glorious gardenTrengwainton is a heavenly garden experience. Carefully constructed paths winding their way through magnolia trees and ferns led us gently on our amble. There were moments of contemplation on the many benches and moments of reflection by the beautiful stream. Colourful primrose planting painted a picture of beauty. Relaxing, inspiring and rewarding at every turn.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024

- spidwidPenzance, United Kingdom279 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit, beautiful gardensThis is a really nice estate, the gardens are beautiful especially when the sun is out. We never went into the estate, just the gardens. The price was affordable.and we had a lovely cream tea. There is a lovely gift shop with a wide range of souvenirs. You can even purchase some plants.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 September 2024

The one-way route is mainly uphill through a formal tree lined path to an open space with a view of the house and distant bay views. The one way Covid 19 route then returns on the main drive to a pleasant but uninspiring walled garden where there was a tightly controlled tea garden. All seating here is open air, assisted bY a few umbrellas. NT volunteers may want to note that the cafe refuse any staff discount. Overall a pleasant visit at a time when colour is rare, but there was little or no information at the outset or on the well signed route.

Visited on 3rd October, so our rating is based on not seeing the gardens at their best. We enjoyed the walk through the woods amongst a vast range of ferns with some magnificent tree ferns. However the kitchen garden and associated walled gardens were very much ‘over’ and lacking any interest. Luckily we are NT members so not an issue re costs, but if you were paying £9.50 you could be somewhat aggrieved. April/ May would appear at be the best time to visit to enjoy the rhododendrons, azaleas and camellia.

Essential to currently book so don’t turn up on the chance. Great walks around beautiful gardens with stunning views from behind the house where in good weather great for picnics with or without kids. But maybe best of all is the fabulous cafe which even during these current times is serving best ever Cornish cream tea always ask for two scones and they let you go back for more jam or cream but have never had the need to.

This garden is fascinating. The stone walls are covered in mosses and lichens, even palm trees. There are palm trees throughout the gardens, some of which must be very old judging by their size. There are areas designated to various plant types and every corner turned reveals something new and interesting. Due to the time of year, work was only just beginning on the various 'room's within the walled gardens but it is clear what this area might look like in a few months. The walks are well laid out and easy to navigate, although our dog did find it quite uncomfortable to walk on being made of a sharp gravel. Tea and cake at the tea room was a welcome and to our visit although the Victoria Sponge was a bit dry. The rest of my family had no complaints with their choices. Great place to visit with an interesting history. A must see if you're in this area.

My husband and I came here while visiting the area on our honeymoon and we both absolutely loved it. The gardens are really beautiful and peaceful. All the blossoms were out which looked lovely, and we were lucky in that it was a beautiful day. We pottered around the gardens and the second hand book shop and then had lunch in the cafe. The food was fantastic. Absolutely delicious and good quality. My only recommendation is that they should have one or two more vegan options. Overall though the gardens are worth visiting, the staff were incredibly friendly, and we would definitely go back.

As good as some of the more expensive gardens in the area. Spent about an hour walking around. Mainly dense sub tropical woodland like trails but some nice flowering plants on the terrace, along the drive and in the walled garden. Would be especially nice to visit in Spring as lots of azalea and rhodedendron bushes.
Only disappointment was the cafe. Freshly baked scones looked delicious but it was a rainy day and staff would only allow outside seating. Really?! Are NT not familiar with the current Covid rules?! Bet most of those scones ended up in the bin as everyone who went in whilst we were there came straight out again without buying anything because of the restrictions applied.

Our visit to Trengwainton Garden yesterday was one we shall cherish.
From the moment we set foot on the pathway, we were engulfed by a jungle of gigantic plants, from stunning rhododendrons to enormous ferns. We were shrouded in what felt like a tropical wilderness. I remarked to my partner that we could easily be in the Caribbean.
Dense planting allowed for a feeling of secrecy as we followed the route, which appealed.
A charming open lawn and terrace with spectacular views of the sea offered a short venture out of the tropics. Several couples had perched on seating areas in this area, some reading, some pausing for photographs of the vista.
A walled garden later in the walk was a treat, I was particularly impressed by a rare Euphorbia and a rather odd looking plant, apologetic in appearance, but more than making up for it with a sumptuous vanilla essence.
Our visit was wonderful. A must visit.

We clearly went at the wrong time of year as there was little in flower. The fern trees are magnificent, but we saw little else of any great interest in the main gardens or the kitchen garden. Not clear why the kitchen garden should be so bare in October. The views over Mount's Bay are somewhat long distance and much better from the coast.
As NT members we didn't pay for entry, but we would have been unhappy paying the £9.50 entry fee to see so little. There is no entry to the house.
This would, hopefully, be a better place to visit in the spring when the rhododendron and magnolia are in flower.

We visited as it was a dog friendly site and the walk through the gardens and woodlands was ok, not the best we’d seen in Cornwall but ok for an hour or so. However the cafe was appallingly slow, not only did we wait ages in the queue to place our order we then waited about 15-20 minutes for our food. Also if you have a dog you have to sit outside so if it starts raining you’re going to have to get wet!

Very pleasant garden where the azaleas, camelias and magnolias are magnificent in late April, and as always you'll enjoy it more on a sunny day!
Awkward to reach by public transport (the Penzance to St Just bus passes by but the service is infrequent), so we took a taxi from our base in Newlyn (c.£11).
Good wide level paths suitable for wheelchair and rollator access, and if heading for the Terrace I would advise disabled users to go up the main driveway (which is surfaced) and then [if desired] return via the parallel track through the woods (which is unsurfaced but very gently downhill). Very friendly staff / volunteers manning the fort in reception.

How big is the garden and how long would I need to spend there being a garden lover?
