With the wedding service being held in a grand room in the circular keep this was possibly the most beautiful and romantic wedding I have ever attended. Guests walked around the foot of the castle walls as we drank champagne after the ceremony and look out over the sea. We moved to a marquee to the side of the castle... More

Although it only opens at the weekends this time of year it is still worth going and the big plus is that you do not have to pay the £3 carpark fee but still get to stroll around the exterior. Dear old Henry built this and its brother which you can see across the water situated at Pendennis point falmouth.... More

We tried to visit, but the English Heritage website specified different opening hours to those on the sign that we found when we arrived to find it closed... spoilt an otherwise good visit to St Mawes.

Wonderful historic castle with exceptional views across the Fal estuary. The site manager is a great chap and has the history of the castle at his fingertips,

We visited the castle on Saturday 29th October - six adults and four children. As soon as we arrived we were treated to a gun firing demonstration and a short interesting talk on the castle's fire power defences through the wars from 1542. The Castle and buildings have been maintained in a wonderful state and it was easy to spend... More

Very enjoyable visit to the castle that can only be truly enjoyed by listening to the audio guide. This really brings the small castle to life and turned it into an historical trip through the ages. Our teenagers were transformed from anticipating a trudge round of boredom on an epic scale to actually having thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely grounds, great... More

One of a series of castles built by Henry VIII to defend against the Spanish. Well maintained and with stunning views.

Having already visited Pendennis Castle a few days previously and found it less than impressive, the reverse was true of St Mawes. Although smaller, it is complete and unspoilt and gives a much truer picture of what a Tudor fortress is like. The audio guide provides excellent information, and is worth having (it's free). The views across the Carrick Roads... More

St Mawes Castle is owned by English Heritage so admission is free for members. The Castle is used as as a wedding venue with two groups been shown the facilities during our visit. The Castle is very interesting with the availability of an audio guide which is essential to fully enjoy the visit. A real insight to the history of... More
