One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Fascinating insight into the history and functioning of a coastal defence station over the centuries. These are the things that kept us safe.

This castle is not large but contains an array of interesting armament and historic items and the views from the ramparts must be amongst the best in the country. Parking is very limited on site so the recommended way is to travel by Castle Ferry...More

Really good value attraction with a varied history. Kids loved the trail and the views are really pretty. Good coffee and really tasty scones make the walk out of Dartmouth worthwhile.

They had run out of scones for cream teas but had a batch cooking that would be half a hour wait. We declined but asked if we could just take away a cheese scone for our grandson. We paid and having waited 10 minutes enquired...More

there are a lot of steep challenging steps so I'd advise against this one for anyone with mobility issues.
