My two young children love the library. It's great to spend an hour looking at the books and doing some colouring on the kids tables. We have visited in the past and met Elmer the elephant. They were given I love library balloons to take home. My youngest is 4 but before we have attended the rhyme time. It's great.... More

Each time I have visited Central Library in Plymouth it has never been an easy venture. Each time I visit I am faced with staff (not only one member but all members) looking down their noses at me, being unhelpful, walking in-front of me expecting me to move out the way with the 'raised eyebrow' look, I fogotton my card... I'm not a fan of this 'renewed' library at all. It's all crammed in and honestly feels absolutely chaotic. As others have pointed out, this is not a quiet library by any stretch of the imagination. It feels a lot more like the few times I was unfortunate enough to enter Jobseekers... I've been in quite a few times, on... More

Had a good look around the Library today and I was well impressed. It seems to be huge and goes on forever with lots of different sections for books and a large amount of computers for use. There is a costa coffee snack bar and some seating dotted around. Also on a nice warm sunny day you can sit out... More

The good points are the library is nicely laid out with the books and computers spread evenly throughout, spacious and airy with a coffee shop and pleasant outdoor seating area, but I do feel a number of staff need training in customer service, my phone rang so doing what I felt was the correct thing and took my phone in... I found this a very odd place. Yes it's mostly white and there are several shelves. It is very exposed to passage by.there seems to be no restriction whatsoever on any conversation, or the use of phones - not least loud ring tones. There is more ambient social noise than in Waterstones or many pubs. I have never subscribed to... More

In a library you have areas where you can talk quietly and areas where you can study in silence. At the new central library you appear to be able to talk in all areas and are also allowed to make and recieve calls on your mobile phone. There are no quiet rooms to read/study in which you do have at... More

One of the first public buildings to be rebuilt after WWII , Plymouth's library has been closed and the site, together with the adjoining museum and art gallery building are to be gutted, extended and rebuilt as a history centre. Meanwhile a 1970s ex building society building has almost finished its conversion into a scaled down modernised and accessible replacement.... More

It's a gorgeous building and while some parts inside aren't as pretty as the outside would suggest, it's still beautiful, especially the staircase. The staff are immensely helpful and if you're looking to research local history, this is the place to go.
