What an amazing place. History in a wonderful setting, you'll need most of the day to do it justice. We found out so much about English history from the informative story sheets in each room and the staff were very helpful. When you're completely saturated by the history, as we were, it's time to relax in the gardens landscaped by Capability... More

We visited on a beautiful sunny day and actually spent more time there than we thought we would. We walked the lovely gardens surrounding the large lake and castle before and after we visited the castle. You can walk to the old castle ruins through the gardens but the ruins can only be seen from the wall surrounding them and... More

Perhaps rather underrated, or Unknown, but the gardens of this castle are just wonderful. Well maintained, good variety of planting, beautiful vistas across a lake, (well done Capability Brown once again!) well cut grass pathways, easy access everywhere. A small but adequate cafe with some outside seating. The castle interior has just been refurbished and is spanking new with bright... More

We had trouble finding this ended up at Sherborne Old Castle first but eventually got here. The entrance fee is £12 an adult about comparable with other places. It is a family home and some areas are obviously out of bounds. We had a very interesting time with some informative guides around the house.

When you plan a day-out you’re always wondering if things will be upto expectations. Well, I needn’t have worried about the trip to Sherborne Castle in Dorset as the experience ticked all the boxes. The Digby family’s 400 year-old pile is set in magnificent grounds created by that ’capability’ chap and overlooks a lake with ruins of the original castle... More

impressive interior with beautiful paintings. Externally not the prettiest or impressive architecture and it doesn't really look like a castle, the grounds are lovely and there are lovely walks along the lake

Staying locally so decided to visit Sherborne Abbey and the two castles. The (new) castle is the stately home built by Sir Walter Raleigh just before he fell out of favour. Although privately owned (HHA). The presentation is similar to that found in National trust properties of a similar type, being fully furnished in 30's style. Volunteer guides friendly and... More

The disappointing part about this is you are not allowed to take pictures inside the castle. The surrounding garden is lovely especially if you have dogs and you can see the real castle ruins from the viewing platform. Ruins are a different attraction but easily viewable from gardens.

A 5* review - how very kind of you. Sadly, we do not permit photos inside the Castle as it is a family home and due to insurance/security and copyright restrictions. We are thrilled that you had a lovely day out. I hope your dog had a good time! More

The gardens are nice but the building is down right ugly, be it historic or whatever. You can choose between the gardens or the gardens and the building. The building is not worth the extra

The castle and grounds opened the day before our visit. Had a beautiful morning walking amongst the spring bulbs and trees and shrubs which were just beginning to flower. Anenomies and primroses were a picture. Castle was open at 11 a.m. and visited it too. Really worth a visit.
