Refused Entry and Rude Staff
Nov 2021 • Couples
Would leave a rating of 0 if I could.

We just tried to visit Batsford Arboretum as my partner is terminally ill and was feeling depressed, we hoped a walk around the arboretum in the fresh air would cheer us up.

However this would prove not to be the case. We arrived just before 3:30pm and got to the entry desk just after 3:30pm to be met by a woman who emerged from a back office with a miserable look on her face and quickly created the impression I was a nuisance.

She proceeded to lecture me on not having booked despite it not being a requirement and then said "well you can't come in anyway as we are past the last entry time." This despite multiple signs outside saying last entry is at 4pm. (Picture enclosed)

She claimed that the last time for entry had recently changed to 3:30pm. Despite us only being there a few minutes after this time and explaining we would be quick and limit our time there to just 30 minutes she became ruder and refused us entry. To argue over a few minutes is very petty especially as the place claims to close at 5pm!

After it became apparent I was dealing with someone who really couldn't be bothered and didn't want our business we promptly left.

We will never be coming back here again. This is a shame as we have visited multiple times in the past however this place now seems to have the old British mentally of being less than helpful and shutting up shop early so they can go home early.

If you don't want to have to deal with rude staff and a jobsworth mentality stay well away!

Another wonderful visit - the Acers were in fantastic colour
Nov 2021
We visited on an early November sunday morning having stayed overnight at the excellent Redesdale Hotel in Moreton in Marsh. There is a large hard surface car park very close to the entrance. Great value at £7.95 to get in.

We may perhaps have been a week late from the peak autumnal colours but the arboretum was a real joy to visit. Imho it is much nicer than Westonbirt Arboretum about 30 miles further south. We walked along the wide main path with lovely views on either side and came to the church in Batsford village at the end -takes about 20 minutes and where you turn round. Sadly the church was closed and the churchyard was not accessible either.

There are paths galore to explore and going up to the top there are some wonderful views of the autumnal trees with the Acers stiil in good colour and also down to the House which is not part of the arboretum. Strategically placed seats with great views are good for a rest. You can also visit the Japanese Rest House, Hermit's Cave and the View Point for great vistas and near the cottage were some fantastically colourful Acers.

There is so much to see at Batsford with also some nice water features - something for everyone plus a decent cafe and garden centre. It is one of my favourite 'gardens' in the country.

Highly recommend coming here, the colours this autumn were stunning.

The walk around the Arboretum was wonderful, giving you the option of 3 different levels of walks - staff friendly - ample cafe inside and out and a large gift shop too.

Beautiful in Autumn
Nov 2021 • Couples
We visited Batsford Arboretum on foot from nearby Moreton-in-Marsh on a cloudy but dry November Saturday. It was busy and we had booked our timed entry online beforehand. The trees were beautiful in their Autumn colours and there are well marked paths throughout. At no time did it feel overcrowded other than in the Garden Centre shop and restaurant.

Batsford Arboretum is within an easy 1.5 mile walking distance from Moreton-in-Marsh along part of the Monarch’s Trail on well signposted trails. There’s even a shortcut to the Monarch’s Trail if you’re on Morton-in-Marsh Caravan and Motorhome Club Site through a gate just past the glamping pods (club members get a discount). From the town Batsford Arboretum is signposted along Corder’s Lane off the High Street.

Very enjoyable visit as a break in a long journey
Oct 2021 • Couples
Travelling from South Wales, we decided to stop off for a picnic lunch and walk around Batsford Arboretum, in Half Term week, so found the car park pretty busy. We were very glad we did, as this reasonably compact and interesting garden was lovely. There is a little map leaflet, but it isn’t totally accurate to follow, and just going where you fancy seems the best policy. The leaflet usefully highlights the various features, if you can find them. Information boards occur from time to time, though we could have done with a few more. The flat path at the bottom of the hill made a nice way back to the car, passing the house and church, and giving some pretty brightly coloured autumnal sights. An outdoor cafe area was well patronised, but we did find a table, before heading north to continue our journey. We plan to revisit in the spring, when I hope there will be wildflowers to admire. The arboretum is well maintained, and there is a small shop and a garden centre that we didn’t visit. Popular with dog owners, so good to have some four legged friends to admire.

Not Bad. Yorkshire for very good
Nov 2021
Went with no real expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Not quite up there with Aboretums in North Yorkshire, but not a bad effort.

Booked online and got there relatively early, 1030. Trails were easy to follow and plenty of colour despite heavy rain and wind around the time we visited.

Nearly died at the Cotswold prices in the shop, but I am from Yorkshire - did I mention that?

All in all worth a visit if in the area, but travel from a distance and chances are there are "as good" places in your local vicinity.

An autumn gem in the Cotswolds
Nov 2021 • Couples
In Autumn this place is stunning. They have a lot of acers so you have some amazing autumn colours in November.
We have been a few times and enjoy seeing it change through the year and the little statues scattered around the park are lovely little 'Easter eggs' to hunt for (or you can cheat and use the map).
The inside cafe had really long queues on 7/11 and they now have a little hot food, cakes and drinks served outside too. Not surprising it was busy on a sunny autumn day!
We always find something to buy in the shop/garden centre too and treated ourselves to a potted acer to take home as a reminder of Batsford.

Beautiful
Nov 2021
Stunningly beautiful collection of trees and a fascinating history, this place is a little gem in the Cotswolds. The autumn colours were dazzlingly gorgeous and the history of how this collection was created and the link to the notorious Mitford family made this a fascinating trip for me. The cake in the cafe was pretty lovely too!

Underwhelming staid and boring
Nov 2021 • Couples
Improve interpretation - explain aomething because the actual collection lacks any wow factor. Get rid of naff little bridges, improve ecology of site - wild bee hives, logs for detritovores etc and use cardboard not plastic cups in restaurant
