Two cathedral city
Sep 2020 • Solo
Portsmouth has two cathedrals. This one is the Catholic cathedral situated across the road on one side from Victoria Park and on the other the Royal Navy dockyard base. First time visit as I walked around many sites in the city centre. Open for private prayer during the Covid pandemic. This is a read brick cathedral which looks nice to the eye. The inside was similar to many other churches that I have visited, good with a few things to see. If you are sightseeing then also go to the cathedral in Old Portsmouth and also the garrison church just around the corner in old Portsmouth.

very little info
Nov 2019
very little info and lacked soul compared to a lot I have visited especially the other Cathedral- it didn't help when you are greeted with a £5 parking fee, it was for a day but we only wanted an hour or so - to me that is immoral especially when they could have told you you could park on the street if there are spaces for an hour or so plus we are pensioners!! We had no interest in going shopping

It’s ok
Jul 2018
There are more impressive examples of RC Cathedrals but this is ok. Traditional brick built and located next to the HM naval base.

Large church set in the busy road network around that part of the city. It is ok and if around worth checking it.

A Beautiful Roman Catholic cathedral.
Jul 2017
This is a building with a special atmosphere. It has been re-ordered to aid the celebration of the Mass in a beautiful way that involves the people. The free-standing altar is obviously the focus, with the bishop's throne behind it. The services have a strong musical tradition that is uplifting. There is a Blessed Sacrament Chapel that is especially suited to private prayer and times of quiet. The general atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

Going to Church
May 2017 • Couples
This cathedral is near the centre of town, and an easy walk from the railway station. It is a large prominent building, constructed of red brick, and dating from the 1880s. It is unfortunately bounded closely on two sides by busy roads. At the front of the cathedral is an imposing statue of St John the Evangelist. The interior is spacious and with many interesting features. There are nice stained glass windows, and a most unusual round oculus window in the South transept. Around the walls are a set of amazing stations of the cross - lifelike three dimensional images. I enjoyed our visit here.

A beautiful cathedral and a sanctuary
Nov 2016 • Business
St John's Cathedral is located in the centre of town, closed to the Commercial Road shopping precinct. It provides a quiet place to sit and contemplate. or to see one of the most beautiful churches in Portsmouth.

Wonderful
Apr 2016 • Couples
This has been my parish Church for the last five years. Wonderful spiritual place, Canon Dominic is one of the greatest priests I've known, and I've known lots. My partner started to join me at the Cathedral around 3 1/2 years ago. At first she found peace then she found faith, especially in the Lady Chapel. Sadly my partner died in early 2015, her Vigil and funeral were at the Cathedral.

A beautiful church and concert hall
Apr 2016 • Solo
In the hustle and bustle of the city of Portsmouth, it's nice to be able to walk into a church like St John's Cathedral and sit quietly for a few minutes. The lofty ceiling, if you notice, is fashioned like an upturn boat. I'm sure there is a grander name for it but to me it is rather pleasing homage to the port city. There is surprisingly a statue to a Filipino saint and I've always enjoyed reading all the notices about charities and groups all over the world that works with the congregation. Students at the university are also served at this church. Note the beautiful stain glass windows too. Do visit, especially when you are in the nearby shopping precinct of Commercial Road.
