This was the north entrance to the town way back when. There are walking tours which go from here and there is now an option to go up it, I believe it is on the weekend for a small fee. This is starting shortly according to Martin, one of the walking tour guides. The surrounding area was very much bombed... More

It is incredible that the Bargate still stands. We enjoyed wali,g the old walls and seeing all the ancient sites. However, the trash that is scattered everywhere spoils it. What a shame that Southampton doesn't take enough pride to keep it clean.

Nice and flat around this area so its easy on the legs, history mixed with the modern day, plenty of cafes and shops etc around. Part of the walls of Southampton, well worth a look if your visiting.

I had had prejudice about Southampton; the city is dull. So, I kept this prejudice in mind when I visited Bargate. It is ok. Not much too see and it smells urine. Some homeless call it home. Poor thing.

On our way to the shopping centre, we just strolled past this large historic gateway! It seems extremely well preserved. Not sure that lots is made of it to tourists...we saw a homeless gentleman underneath and nothing that looked like visits were regularly invited. We enjoyed looking at it from the outside and, if you like old buildings, then it's... More

The central section of the Bargate is said to be the oldest of Southampton's stone gateways and formed part of the original defenses of the town, even before the notorious French attack of the mid-14th century. Although the walls have fallen victim to bombing, neglect, and town planning over the centuries, the Bargate is still magnificent when approached from the... More

Not sure of the date of the Bargate. It was part of the wall surrounding old Southampton. There is a museum up some steps and it is well worth looking at the tapestry This area was on the water front many years ago and the barges had to go through the gate to sell their wares.

Walked past it while going to West Quay. It is quite impossible to miss the Bargate when walking along the shopping areas around it. However, nobody seems really interested in it despite its historical significance. Really sad ending to a great piece of history.

To residents of Southampton the Bargate is as normal as looking up and seeing the sky, however... If the council tried to demolish it there would be a riot! It's open at times, but I can only just remember going inside it once in 45 years, you can walk through it all the time, as its part of the old... More
